Seth Aubrey Turman was born October 2, 1978 in Dallas Texas to Steve Turman and Lucinda (Cindy) Howe Turman (now Pulito). He was the first of three sons born to the couple. He lived with his family in Dallas until 1983 when they moved to Tyler, Texas, his dad's hometown. In 1987 they moved to Lubbock, Texas, then in 1990 he moved back to the Dallas-Fort Worth area with his mom, brothers, and step-father; they soon settled in Grapevine. He graduated from Grapevine High School in 1997.
Seth had dreams and moved to Austin, Texas (where his parents met while in college) with some high school friends with hopes of following in the footsteps of Richard Linklater, a fellow Texan who had become an acclaimed filmmaker with the movies "Slacker" and "Dazed and Confused", which focused on Austin's laid-back and quirky characters, especially its teenagers. Meanwhile his mom, step-dad, and brothers had relocated to Minneapolis, and Seth, feeling the pull of family, eventually followed suit. There, he found a calling and some success as a waiter, then a General Manager of several of the Twin Cities' finer restaurants. He also married in 2007 and had a child in 2009.
But like many folks of artistic bent who wrestle with the tension "between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender" (thanks, Jackson Browne), he was still driven to create, so, while working full-time in the restaurant business he wrote a novel and self-published it; this took years. Then he taught himself guitar and wrote songs for several more years, finally completing an album just weeks before succumbing to the cancer that had been inside him for likely a dozen years. In this he showed remarkable strength and determination, especially during the almost six years since his diagnosis and the many treatments he received for his condition. His parents and others who knew him long observed he always had an extremely high tolerance of physical pain. Now he is finally pain-free, for which we are grateful.
Seth loved not only music and books, but movies, TV, politics, and other aspects of popular culture. He was insightful, quick-witted, and he liked people. Most of all he loved his child, who will be sixteen in a few months.
Seth is predeceased by his paternal grandfather H. Kenneth Turman; maternal grandparents Richard W. Howe and Jean Ann (Hinman) Howe; biological grandmother MaryJane Howe (Doane); step-grandparents Alfred J. Pulito and Virginia E. Pulito; stepfather Richard S. Pulito; maternal uncle Jeffrey L. Howe; and maternal cousin Jessica Howe.
Seth is survived by his only child JT Turman; mother Lucinda L. Pulito; father Steven K. Turman; stepmother Maggie McQuown; brothers Micah Howe Turman (Abigail L. Turman) and Zachary Steven Turman; step-brother and step-sister, respectively Michael R. Pulito (Haley Pulito), Kathryn V. Pulito (partner Kendrick Toomer). Seth is also survived by his (paternal) grandmother Patricia A. (Branson) Turman, as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
We will all miss him.

October 25, 2024

This memory is from my mother, Seth's grandmother, Pat Turman. He was not quite 2 years old. He and his parents were staying with Pat and Kenneth in Tyler. Early one morning, mom found Seth sitting on the floor, dressed in his little white nightshirt, in front of the big box television. He was totally engrossed in watching a dark TV screen. Mom couldn't figure out what he was doing until Cindy came into the room and explained that Seth loved Sesame Street and was waiting for it to appear. Mom was a little worried but also deeply impressed by his patience and powers of concentration!
