Shaker “George” Saman

Dr. Shaker George Saman, affectionately known as "George," passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous year-and-a-half battle with a mystery illness.

George was born and raised in Damascus, Syria, where he earned his medical degree before immigrating to the United States in 1994 to continue his medical training. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia and later moved to Tampa, Florida, to pursue a three-year fellowship at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, serving his final year as Chief Fellow.

A highly respected physician, George was recognized as the Best Hematologist in the Tidewater area in both 2016 and 2018. He took great pride in his work, his patients, and the life he built, often expressing that he had achieved the American dream through dedication and service.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Laurel Hurvitz-Saman; his beloved children, Alexia and Kameron; his parents, Elham and Burhan Samaan; his siblings; Muhenad, Basel and Hanan. He is also survived by a host of in-laws, extended family members and friends.

George will be remembered for his warmth, brilliance, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family and patients. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the love he shared.
