Sharon A. Butler, devoted wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, after prolonged illness and hospitalizations.
Sharon was born November 29, 1942 in Dallas, Texas to Elmer and Wanda Smith. She grew up in Ponca City, Oklahoma and graduated from highschool there with the class of 1960.
She met her husband James William (Bill) Butler while he was attending college. A friend talked him into going to an ice cream parlor one evening because, "they might meet some girls". Bill and his friend just happened to pull up next to a car where Sharon was the passenger. The moment he saw her he says it was love at first sight. The story goes on that it took a lot of trying, but Sharon finally gave him her phone number that same night. He still says she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen! As they say, the rest is history!
Bill and Sharon were married on May 26, 1962, at Dodge Baptist Church in Grove, Oklahoma. The wedding was officiated by Bill's father, Rev. John E. Butler. Two sons were born to this union, Bradley Dean Butler and Lance Eugene Butler.
Bill and Sharon moved from Grove to Wewoka in 1973. Sharon went to work for Lillian Russell and Custom Size, Inc. where she served in their business offices.
With the closing of those plants in 1979, Sharon went to work in the County Assessor's Office where she became First Deputy to then Assessor, Charletta Haskins. Upon Ms. Haskin's death in 1996 Sharon was unanimously appointed by the county commissioners to full-fil her unexpired term. She was then elected to serve a full term as County Assessor, retiring from her duties on December 31, 2004.
Sharon and Bill, both big athletic enthusiast of sports in general, have watched their sons, great grandsons, and great granddaughter excel in many sports through the Wewoka School System. Sharon was their #1 cheerleader rain or shine. She also has enjoyed watching her granddaughter Lucy play field hockey on occasion and kept up with her through phone calls and Facebook. Lucy is now an honor student at Colorado University. Sharon was equally proud of her grandson Will and his academic achievements as he was given the most outstanding Junior in his class award during 11th grade ceremonies this past June at the Denver Academy.
Sharon loved arts and crafts and attended ceramic classes, making beautiful pieces she shared with friends and family. She also loved Wewoka Sorghum Day where she was not only in attendance but participated in some of the events.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Elmer and Wanda Smith; son, Bradley Dean Butler; brother, Kenny Smith; Brother in-law, Gene Butler; and great granddaughter Taylor Dawn Ramsey.
She leaves to mourn her husband of 60 years, Bill Butler; son, Lance Butler and his children, Lucy and Will Butler of Colorado; Granddaughter and her husband, Stephanie and Derek Ramsey and their children, Ty Ramsey and his girlfriend Trinity Sproul, Riley Ramsey and Callie Ramsey of Wewoka; Her daughter in-law Connie Butler and granddaughter Stacy Butler of Wewoka; Brother in-law John Elmo and Marsha Butler; Sister in-law, Bonnie Smith; Aunt Pat Raynor and husband Don, and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
