We are profoundly saddened to announce the passing of Sharon Ann Mathis of
Oak Point, Texas. She experienced a heart attack on July 27, 2023, followed by heart bypass surgery, yet her body was just too fragile to recover. She died at the age of 80 surrounded by loved ones in
Denton, Texas on Friday August 25, 2023.
Sharon is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, James R Mathis of
Oak Point, Texas. Along with two loving children and their families. The eldest, Gregory Mathis, and wife, Beth of
Evergreen, CO. Daughter, Deborah Moore and husband Matthew reside in
Emory, TX. Additionally, there are three granddaughters, Damara Mathis, Abigail Mathis, and Haylie Pruette. She is also survived by her oldest sister Lillian Colette Miller of Oklahoma City, OK and her twin sister, Shirley McCutcheon of
Wichita Falls, TX.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Nelson Earl Boyle and mother, Lanta Estelline Boyle of
Burkburnett, TX. Also, by her brother Leslie Boyle of
Burkburnett, TX.
Sharon was born on July 19, 1943 in
Wichita Falls, TX. She was a southpaw that played piano and baritone in high school and her love of music caused her to seek a degree in Music at North Texas in
Denton, TX. Her favorite music was classical and jazz. North Texas is also where she met her soul mate James Mathis from New Deal, TX. They met through mutual friends and fell in love (not at first sight, but maybe second). They were married September 4, 1964 in
Burkburnett, TX. And thus began their adventure together, across the United States. They lived in numerous states, Indiana, California, Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Connecticut, Colorado, and Virgina only to end up back in Texas practically where it all began, just outside of Denton in the small town of Oak Point.
Her many adventures across the US included caring for two children less than a year apart in age that were always going in separate directions. Greg was born in Indiana and Debbie in California. She was an exceptionally loving mother and grandmother. She adored her grand 'girls' and she was extremely proud of all their accomplishments.
Sharon taught piano when her children were elementary age, and even attempted to teach them. While they lived in Kansas, she went back to school when her children were in junior high school. She took computer programming and some interior design classes. She worked as a computer programmer for several years. She also liked rearranging the furniture in the living room every so often to keep everyone on their toes (or perhaps to keep them stubbing their toes).
She sang in the church choir, and sometimes accompanied the choir on piano. Her favorite church home was Church of the Hills in
Evergreen, CO. She also enjoyed playing tennis and when they lived in Georgia, she played on a neighborhood tennis team. She liked cooking and experimenting on her family from time to time with new recipes. She also loved gardening and curling up with a good book.
Sharon was a warrior, she survived Hodgkin lymphoma, in 1989. She also won a battle with a respiratory infection that left her in the hospital for 79 days in 2003. Followed up by overcoming breast cancer in 2007. She was a clever, humorous, gifted, soft spoken and inspirational human being! A superhero!
She loved cats, and when they lived in VA as empty nesters, they adopted sisters Daisy and Yoda.
After moving back to Texas and as technology advanced, so did her love of gaming. She was after all, known as 'Gaming Granny.' She played PlayStation with her grandchildren, especially Haylie, her gaming buddy. She always loved her trips to Colorado to see Damara and Abi and watch them compete in various equestrian events.
"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal."
As a celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held on Sunday September 3, 2023 at 1:30 pm at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home at 705 N Locust Street in Denton Texas.
