Sharon Sue Shields, 75, of
Fredericksburg, Virginia met her Lord and Savior Monday, April 7, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on January 28, 1950, in Sprague, West Virginia, to the late Clarence and Helen Shaffer.
Sharon married Bernard "Butch" Shields, Jr. and they settled in Fredericksburg over 50 years ago to raise their family and invest in the community. She loved being a mom and invested in the activities of her girls, their friends, and later her grandchildren. She was an excellent example of service and care for others especially when they were going through a storm in their lives.
Sharon was a long-time member of Spotswood Baptist Church where she served in many roles in her years of faithful service. She was bold in her faith and would often ask people she met in the community about their faith in Christ and where they attended church which was followed up with an invitation to attend her church. Sharon loved her years as a teacher's assistant at Fredericksburg Christian School and then served many years as a substitute in various elementary schools. She couldn't go many places without hearing, "Mrs. Shields! Mrs. Shields!" from a previous student.
She loved playing games with friends and family. If you were around her any length of time, you certainly would learn how to play Five Crowns and Skyjo. In recent years, she enjoyed trips with Butch and friends to Southern Gospel events.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband of almost 56 years, Butch Shields; two daughters, Kimberly Mills (Brad) of Ruther Glen, Virginia and Jennifer Copley (Sean) of Evans, Georgia; four grandchildren, Payton Mitchell (Connor) of
Fredericksburg, Virginia, Aaron, Caleb and Leah Copley of Evans, Georgia; her brother, Harold Shaffer of Catonsville, Maryland; her sister, Linda Shaffer of Sprague, WV; and many extended family members.
The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to family and so many friends that have ministered to them over the past month as well as Dr. Bonny Moore and many other healthcare providers who have brought comfort and love in this difficult journey.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2024 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, at Spotswood Baptist Church. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network () or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation ().
