Sheila Alleman Gomez was born July 2, 1944, and was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 12, 2025. Her angels escorted her to her special place by the side of the Lord. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, and wife of 61 years. Everyone who met her was touched by her warmth, kindness, and generosity. She was deeply loved.
Sheila was Baptized and Confirmed in the Catholic faith and was a member of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish. She was an active member in St. Thomas More parish while her three children attended school there. She volunteered for many hours preparing creative activities for Mission Days and making delicious treats. Sheila took her love of cooking and cake baking to the next level by teaching cake decorating classes and catering for friends. She eventually achieved her dream of opening a catering facility in 1980, Ashley Manor Reception Center. The success and popularity of the “Manor” grew and the Gomez’s hosted many weddings and other events for 20 years, including the very popular Food Focus shows. During that time, Sheila became the first female Certified Executive Chef in Louisiana in 1990 and won the gold medal with her entry of “Chocolate Baskets” in the Culinary Classic Competition. She was a very talented chef, artist, decorator, and gardener. She loved working in her flower beds, and painting with oils. She developed her love of everything artistic while in elementary school at Our Lady of Mercy. In high school she proudly studied under Adelie Brendt at St. Joseph’s Academy where she graduated in 1962. She went on to study Art under Paul Dufour at Louisiana State University.
Sheila married her first and only love of her life, Elmo A. “Sonny” Gomez on January 31,1964 and celebrated 61 years of marriage. Sheila was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2010. Sonny showed his love for Sheila every day during her last years as they faced the difficult situation head on. Sheila’s last triumph was to complete a cookbook of favorite recipes from family, friends, and Ashley Manor, named Scratch Cooking with Maw Maw Sheila. It is a tribute to her tenacious spirit and determined personality. Sheila’s creative ability and reputation as an astute business manager and chef will remain in the hearts of her family and all that knew her.
Sheila is predeceased in death by her parents, John E. and Dorothy “Dot” Phillips Alleman, and her sister, Carla Denise Alleman, as well as her loving grandmother, Martha “GaGa” Michael, and her brother-in-law, Herschel Hamilton.
Sheila is survived by her loving husband Elmo Anthony “Sonny” Gomez, Jr. and their three children, Shawn Anthony Gomez, Corey Joseph Gomez (Tobi), and Danielle Gomez Davis (Joel); grandchildren, Brenn Anthony (Rachael), Corey Joseph Jr., Casey Luke, Christian Cael, Ryan Joseph, Mason Curt, Brady Tate, Mia Reese; and three great granddaughters, Vera Louise, Margot Evelyn, and Isla Jane. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren with whom she spent many memorable times. She also leaves to mourn her, a sister, Sharon Rae and husband Richard “Dickie” LaFleur, their daughter Brandi LaFleur and husband Dylyn Breust; and a brother, John Alleman.
Sheila’s family extends gratitude and appreciation for the services of St. Joseph’s Hospice, volunteers, caregivers, nurses, Most Blessed Sacrament Church, and the number of doctors who have helped her through her medical difficulties. They give notes of thanks to her friends and family who also helped in her care, especially her sisters-in-law Jeannie Miller, Cheryl Sanchez, and Charlene Hamilton; her cousin, Tara “Mrs, Terry” Messenger; and her special life-long friends Nancy Schwab, Marta Hernandez, and in memoriam Stella Guidroz.
