Sheila D. (Mackey) Umeki, age 70, was born on Monday May 10, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio. She passed away peacefully on Saturday December 14, 2024 in Berkeley, California after a short battle with lung cancer.
Sheila graduated from Eastmoor High School in Columbus, Ohio, received her Bachelors Degree from Bowling Green University, and her Master Degree from Golden Gate University in California. She moved to Los Angeles, California after graduating from Bowling Green University in 1977, accompanied by her cousin Sidney Stewart.
On September 17, 1988 Sheila married Spencer Jiro Umeki. She converted to her husband's religion, Buddhism, after their marriage. They were married 36 years. Spencer passed away three months prior to Sheila's passing. To this union were born twins, Alexandra and Coco Umeki. Sheila loved and was very proud of her twins, both being college graduates. She was deeply devoted to family and friends.
Sheila and Spencer loved to entertain. Most yearly holiday events were hosted at their home for family and friends. They welcomed everyone into their home with open arms. As many family members can attest to, you were treated like royalty. They cooked for you, took you to very nice restaurants, and took you on site seeing tours. Their love and kindness was felt. Their tradition for the last 30 years was to have family and friends over for Christmas dinner. They hosted as many as thirty people each year. During her illness Sheila spoke of her sadness in not being able to host the Umeki Christmas party.
Sheila was one of the first women to enter the computer industry and successfully climbed the corporate ladder. At the age of 63, she completed her Master's Degree in project and systems management. She considered this one of her great accomplishments. Sheila prioritized her co-workers, supported them in and outside the office, and was dedicated to helping them succeed in their professional and personal lives. She had a way with words and always reminded everyone "it's not what you say, it's how you say it." Sheila worked up until the time of her death as Vice President of Technology at Wells Fargo in San Franscico for over 20 years. She was a member of the Mentorship program at Wells Fargo.
Sheila was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara J. (Battle) Mackey; father, Ernest D Mackey Jr.; stepmother Jean Thompson Mackey, and husband, Spencer Jiro Umeki. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Alexandra Umeki and CoCo Umeki both of California; sisters, Toni (Ron) Ayers, Tracy Mackey, Stephanie Thompson, Robin (Rodney) Washington all of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Ernest (Susan) Mackey of Georgia; sister-in-law, Donna (Mark Greenside) Umeki of California; aunts, Royaline (Kelvin) Edwards of Maine, Shirley Lightfoot of Texas; uncle, Foster (Ravenna) Covington of Virginia.
Loving memories are also cherished by her nieces, Kelly Elkins, Brieana (Paul) Harrison, Lauren (Noah) Nix, Jamie McCree, Makenna Leonard, Carmen Elkins, Lana Ayers, and Skylar and Alana Harrison; nephews, Allen (Lucilene) Ayers, Brian Ayers, Ernest David Mackey, Deon and Justin Washington, and Arie Ayers; a host of cousins and friends. Special life long friends include Robert Lee of Columbus, Ohio and Edwina Magana of Los Angeles, California.
