It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roderick Todd McElwain, who left this world on September 26, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Born on November 11, 1965, Roderick, affectionately known as Pooh or Rod, lived a life marked by love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was 59 years old at the time of his passing, succumbing to heart failure.

Roderick was the cherished son of Andy Vermont English Jr. and Nettie Ree Gaddis. He was also a beloved brother to Reggie Carson, Terri English-Trotter, and Ronnie McElwain. He was preceded in death by his loving family members, including his father, grandfather Vermont English, grandmother Hosephine Holmes, grandfather Willie Gaddis, grandmother Ruby Gaddis, and grandfather Epp Tatum. Their memories will forever be etched in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Roderick was a devoted father to his four children: Whisper McElwain, Tiffany Burnett, Seilant Rivera-Jimenez, and Precious McElwain. He took immense pride in his role as a father and was a guiding light in their lives. His legacy continues through his seven beloved grandchildren: D’vontay Robinson Jr., Marquie Burnett, Maryah Fields, La’nae Johnson, Ja’niya Lee, Santiago Smith, and Melodi Grasty, each of whom brought him indescribable joy.

Roderick's early education began at St. Thomas Catholic School, followed by Mifflin High School, from which he graduated from Eastmoor Academy. His thirst for knowledge led him to attend the Northwest Career Center, where he completed Fire Service Training, paving the way for a fulfilling career dedicated to public service.

From 1987 to 1992, Roderick proudly served in the United States Air Force, exemplifying his commitment to his country. This spirit of service continued throughout his professional life as he worked diligently for various fire departments including Columbus Airport, Columbus, Madison Township, Harrison Township, and Worthington municipalities. For 22 years, he dedicated his life to the Dayton Fire Department, where he was known not only for his bravery but also for his compassion and leadership.

In addition to his career, Roderick was a beloved member of the Apostolic Christian Church of Christ, where he found community and fellowship. His hobbies included photography, poetry, and culinary arts, reflecting his artistic nature and love for the finer things in life. Roderick's passion for capturing moments through his lens and expressing himself through words was a testament to his creative spirit.

Roderick will be remembered for his kindheartedness, humor, and philosophical outlook on life. He had a unique ability to uplift those around him with his steadfast presence and generous soul. Whether through a shared laugh, a comforting word, or a moment of deep reflection, Rod touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on their hearts.

As we mourn his passing, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the friends and family members who have reached out during this difficult time. Your prayers and support have been a source of strength and comfort for the family.
