Shelby Cornett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weeks' Funeral Homes - Buckley on Jan. 29, 2026.
Shelby Cornett, born Shelby Jean Senter on December 4, 1936, in Richlands, Virginia, was a woman whose resilience and compassion shaped every chapter of her extraordinary life. Much like the flowers she lovingly tended in her garden, Shelby bloomed with quiet strength, beauty, and grace. Her heart was a steady beacon of kindness, guiding and comforting all who knew her.

After losing her father as a toddler, Shelby was raised at Mooseheart Orphanage in Chicago, Illinois-a place that would profoundly shape her spirit. It was there, in 1953, that she met the love of her life, Edward Cornett Sr. The two married on July 21, 1954, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in devotion, adventure, and family.

Together, they raised 8 children and built a life across many places-Middletown, OH; San Diego, CA; Portland, OR; Aloha, OR; Oregon City, OR; Graham, WA; Spokane, WA; Sulkum, WA-before finally settling in Buckley, Washington. Shelby made her home wherever her family was, and each place became richer because of her presence.

Shelby lived with an adventurous and creative spirit. She loved hunting, fishing, hiking, nature walks, gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, and especially nurturing flowers and watching birds. Her hands were always busy creating, caring, or cultivating something beautiful.

Her resilience shone brightest when, in her 60s, she returned to school to earn her high school diploma-a testament to her determination and lifelong love of learning. Shelby also poured her compassion into her work as a school bus driver, where she cared deeply for the children she transported each day.

Above all, Shelby cherished her family. She is survived by her children Edward (Charlotte) Jr., daughter in law Karlene (Randy), Cindy, Russ (Loree) Sr., Susan (Dennis) Browe, Ron, Jim (Carill), and Kathy (Gary) Hassenyager; her sister Judy; and her sisters in law's Martha, Shirley (Monte), and Seanie. She leaves behind a large and loving legacy of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerrymiah and Armintha Senter; seven of her nine siblings; her beloved husband, Edward Cornett Sr.; her son Randy; her grandson Wesley; and her great grandson Austin Smouse.

Shelby Cornett's legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering compassion. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her memory will forever remain a source of comfort and inspiration. As we celebrate her remarkable life, we invite you to share your memories and upload photos to Shelby's memorial page. Your tributes will stand as a beautiful testament to the impact she made on all who loved her.
