URBANA – Shelby Gene Honchell, 86 of Urbana, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025 in his home.
Shelby was born on March 22, 1938 in Lee County, Kentucky, the son of Orvin and Geneva (Brandenburg) Honchell.
A proud graduate of Salem High School in Kingscreek, Shelby and his brother Kenny were well known as legendary pitchers for the Salem High School baseball team. Shelby's love for sports continued throughout his life, as he remained a loyal fan of the New York Yankees and Duke basketball. He also enjoyed spending time with friends on the bowling lanes and relaxing with a fishing rod in hand. Shelby had a passion for exploring new places and loved to travel whenever he could.
Shelby is survived by his daughter, Laurie Shafer; his son, Gregory Honchell; his grandchildren, Karl and Daniel Shafer, Wade, Abbi (David Couch) and Chloe Honchell; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; his brothers, Kenneth (Linda) Honchell; his sister, Becky (Donald) Godfrey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara Honchell; his parents; his son, Michael Honchell; his sister, Marilyn Honchell.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Jeffery Allen officiating.
Burial will be held at Kingscreek Cemetery.

Great baseball coach! I enjoyed playing for "Urbana Soft-Water" back in the day . He taught me how to hit a curve ball ... Lots of good memories! Sorry for your loss Greg.
