Sumner Funeral and Cremation Lakeside - HendersonvilleShel took the hand of Jesus and went to heaven July 21, 2025, passing comfortably in his home in Hendersonville, surrounded by family. Shel fought a long hard battle with heart failure. Sheldon was a commercial Airline Captain (retired). He flew for Lake Central, Eastern, Allegany and US Air from which he retired. He flew the skies for 28 years. Shel was born in York, PA, graduated from Emery Riddle Aeronautical University, and a graduate of Penn State University.
His love of planes and flying were his life. He built an airplane in 2008 in South Carolina- A Highlander that we enjoyed many flights in. He had many hobbies including assembling model planes, working on puzzles, reading, and restoring cars. Shel had 3 AMX cars he had in shows, he loved back road rides, finding out-of-the-way restaurants, and sitting by his pool watching the planes fly over. Shel loved his dog Charlie, his companion and shadow.
He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Gallatin Cares, and the Samaritan’s Center. Shel was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir.
Sheldon was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Barmont Bryner and father, Clarence Sheldon Bryner of Chambersburg, PA; and a son, Michael Rebney Bryner of Hendersonville, TN. Shel is survived by his wife of 24 years, Carolyn Stasek Bryner of Hendersonville; step-daughter, Christy Taylor Irwin of Gallatin; sons, Matt Bryner of Hendersonville, Benny Bryner (Donna) of Greenbrier; and step-son, Allen Taylor (Ginger) of Gallatin.
Sheldon is survived by 13 grandchildren: Collin Irwin (Kimmie) of Bowling Green, KY, Amber Irwin of Hendersonville Rachael Murphy of Gallatin, Finley Bryner and Andrew Bryner of Hendersonville, Chelsey Bryner of Portland, Cody Taylor, Hannah Taylor and Lucas Taylor of Gallatin, Zoey Basham, Braxton Basham and Paisley Shrum of Gallatin, as well as Correy Wilkenson of Yuma, AZ.
Sheldon is also survived by 10 great grand children: Cason, Parker, Matilda, Riley, Spencer, Remington, Patrick, Madison, Charles, and Piper. Also surviving are his brother, John Bryner (Peggy) of Chambersburg, PA; brothers-in-law, Frank Stasek (Cathy), Danny McCormick (Joyce), Jefferey Kingsbury (Tammy); and 10 nieces and nephews, Tim, Nikki, Ryan, Paige, Connor, Luke, Megan, Brandon, Lauren and Brooke.
Shel’s closest friends are Damian Newberger (Judy) of Chicago and Jason Woodard and Percy Woodard of Hendersonville.
A celebration of life will be held at the Bryner home, 115 Crooked Creek Court, Hendersonville, TN 37075 on Saturday, August 23rd (rain date of August 30th) from 3:00 p.m. unitl 6:00 p.m. More information on this special day will be posted closer to date on Carolyn Bryner’s Facebook update.
