Sherrie Lynn Doughty was freed from the chains of Alzheimer’s disease and passed peacefully into the next life on Thursday, October 17, 2024. She was born October 25, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, to Hoyt Edward and Uldena Mae Perkins. Sherrie graduated from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City in May 1967, and continued her education at Oklahoma State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1971.

On May 30, 1970, Sherrie was united in marriage with Michael Dean Doughty in Oklahoma City and to this union, two sons were born, Steve and Brian. They were married nearly 44 years, before Mike’s passing in 2014. Following graduation from Oklahoma State, Sherrie began a long and distinguished teaching career at Perry Public Schools, where she primarily taught freshman English. Sherrie was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year in 1991. She was beloved by students and credited by many as a driving influence in their future careers. Sherrie loved seeing former students and hearing about the good times they had and lessons they learned while they were students in her class. She also treasured the opportunity to educate both of her boys and their many friends as students at Perry Junior High.

Sherrie retired from teaching soon after the birth of her first grandchild, but she and Mike continued their unwavering support of the youth in Perry, especially as regular attendees at PHS sporting events. She and Mike were proud to live in and serve the Perry community and honored to have contributed to the educational foundation of so many successful Perry students.

In addition to her service to the school system, Sherrie also was a former member of the Noble County Family YMCA Board of Directors, helping facilitate the opening of the new YMCA building in 1986. An avid, life-long reader, Sherrie was a member of the Perry Study Club and was always ready and willing to discuss the latest novel she had finished or the one she had just started reading. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perry, until moving to Lawton in 2019, to be close to her family.

Friends are welcome to drop by Brown-Dugger to sign her book on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Brown-Dugger Funeral Home of Perry. Kent Ritchie will officiate. Interment will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery in Perry. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of the donor’s choice, in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, Oklahoma 73077.

Sherrie is survived by her two sons, Steve Doughty and his wife, Kimberley of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Brian Doughty and his wife, Stacy of Pampa, Texas; sisters Dianna Pue and her husband Howard, of Ashland, Missouri, and Keely Beene of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Jacob Doughty and Avery Doughty, of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Kenzee Doughty of Pampa, Texas; as well as three nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mike, and parents, Hoyt and Dena Perkins.
