Sheryl Travis Obituary

SHERYL LYNN TRAVIS

January 28, 1961 – November 1, 2025

Sheryl Lynn Travis, born January 28, 1961, in Van Nuys, California, passed away unexpectedly. She attended Van Nuys High School and later moved to Bakersfield, where she raised four children: Christopher, Kimberly, and twins Jeffrey and Steven. Inspired by her brother's battle with AIDS, Sheryl became Executive Director of the Bakersfield AIDS Foundation, advocating tirelessly for awareness and support. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Johnny. Sheryl is survived by her children and eight beloved grandchildren, who proudly called her "Gigi."

Services at Greenlawn Southwest are pending in January.

Our condolences go out to the Travis family, Sheryl and I spent many hours together working at BAF and many more talking and laughing. Just a few weeks ago I was telling friends about sitting next to Sheryl on an airplane flight and how I have permanent fingernail marks in my knee.
I learned a lot from Sheryl and enjoyed spending time with her family.
While we haven´t been in contact in many years. She has and will be remembered fondly.

Sheri was part of my life during some very meaningful years, as the sister of John, my life partner who passed away in 1988. Although life eventually took us on separate paths, I remember the time when we shared family, memories, and hope.

Life´s journey is not always easy, and some paths are more complicated than others. I choose to remember Sheri with compassion and to honor her as the mother of four wonderful children, whom I continue to hold close to my heart.

I hope Sheri has found the peace that sometimes felt just out of reach in life, and that her children and loved ones find comfort during this time.

I believe in life God gives us friends to help us through a season and that was what Sheryl was to me. She was the best friend anybody could ever ask for during a time when we were both raising our young babies. She was always there for me to help me laugh through the good times and to cry and support me through the hard times. Between us we had seven kids in seven years and we were always there for each other in every way possible. For many years, we were closer than sisters until our paths went in different directions. I will always thank God for bringing such a special person into my life. She was an amazing mother and an amazing friend. To Chris, Kimmy, Jeffrey, and Steven, my heart goes out to you and I´m very sorry for your loss. I really loved your mom.
Love,
Colette Gustafson
