Shie Yu Lin Mannina, 85, Devoted Mother, Beloved Sister, and Advocate for Beauty in All Its Forms, Dies By Jamie Mannina April 2025 Shie Yu Lin Mannina, whose boundless spirit carried her from the verdant landscapes of Taiwan to the bustling heart of New York City, died peacefully of natural causes on April 1 in Manhattan. She was 85. Born on October 14, 1939, in Luodong, Taiwan, then part of the Republic of China, Ms. Mannina was raised in the warm embrace of a large and loving family that included her two close sisters and eight brothers. The values instilled during her formative years-resilience, compassion, and a deep appreciation for community-would become the cornerstones of her remarkable life. She was the beloved daughter of a local dress shop owner, and the rhythms of family, hard work, and humility were stitched into her character from the very beginning. In the 1970s, driven by the pursuit of the American dream, Shie Yu embarked on a courageous journey to Los Angeles. There, she furthered her education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), demonstrating an early commitment to learning and growth. Her ambition and perseverance then led her to New York City, where she built a respected career in finance at Sumitomo Corporation. Her colleagues remember her not only for her diligence but also for her warm demeanor and collaborative spirit. In New York, she got married to Eugene S. Mannina, a Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Together, they raised their son, Jamie, in the close-knit community of Stuyvesant Town on Manhattan's East Side, instilling in him the values that defined Shie Yu's life: compassion, perseverance, and quiet strength. A passionate traveler, she wandered from the cobbled alleys of Eastern Europe to the sun-drenched plazas of Latin America, from the tranquil temples of Japan to the silent, glistening shores of Antarctica. To Shie Yu, travel was never just a journey-it was an invitation to wonder, a way to listen to the world and carry its stories home. She found joy in nature, particularly in the flutter of wings and the quiet elegance of birdsong. A devoted bird watcher and plant enthusiast, her home was a sanctuary of orchids, vines, and the occasional hand-fed cardinal. Her faithful bulldog, Meatball, was a constant companion through all seasons of life-a source of laughter, comfort, and unconditional love. In retirement, Ms. Mannina's voice-long a source of quiet comfort to those who knew her-took center stage. Singing with a Taiwanese American choir, she graced the stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, her voice carrying the echoes of a homeland and the warmth of community. Through song, she found both joy and purpose, creating harmony not just in music, but in life. A naturalized citizen, Ms. Mannina was deeply proud of both her Chinese American identity and her adopted homeland. She followed politics closely, championing democratic ideals and civil rights with a conviction forged by experience and shaped by hope. Her activism was not loud, but it was firm, and it reflected her deep belief in the power of individual voices to shape a better world. In her twilight years, Shie Yu deepened her spirituality and connection with God, attending mass faithfully every Sunday. Her quiet devotion brought her strength, peace, and a renewed sense of grace that she carried into every aspect of her life. Above all, she was a mother whose devotion to her son was unwavering and unconditional. She was a woman who led with grace, laughed with her whole heart, and lived with purpose. Her love was not transactional or conditional-it was a constant, like the seasons or the tide. The memory of Shie Yu Lin Mannina serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact one life, lived with intention and kindness, can have on the world. A strong and independent woman, she dedicated her life to the well-being of her beloved son and navigated the world with an open heart and a selfless spirit. Her legacy extends beyond the cherished memories she leaves behind; it lives on in the countless lives she touched with her warmth, the smiles she inspired, and the enduring spirit of compassion she embodied. She is survived by her son, Jamie Mannina, and by all those whose lives were brightened by her presence. Her light endures in each of them.
