Shirley M. Baxter, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on October 9, 2025. Born on January 28, 1951, in Niles, MI, to the late Harold and Marie (Shriner) Baxter, Shirley's life was a testament to the love and care she bestowed upon her family and the joy and warmth she brought into the world.
Shirley's journey through life was marked by her unwavering devotion to her family. She was the loving mother of Linda (John) Pike and Tim (Kerrie) Gabbeart. She also embraced her role as a stepmother to Cathy (Ron) McNeil and Oliver "Bud" (Annette) Gabbeart. Her grandchildren, Samantha Gabbeart, David Pike, and Sarah Pike, along with her step-grandchildren, Michael (Lindsay) McNeil, Allen Michael Gabbeart, and Andrew (Sam) Gabbeart, were the light of her life. Shirley's brothers, John (Gloria) Baxter, Bob (Patricia) Baxter, and Billy Baxter, will remember her as a beacon of kindness and support. She was preceded in death by her beloved fiancé, Richard O'Grady, with whom she shared many treasured moments, especially enjoying concerts where Richard sang and played music.
A homemaker at heart, Shirley's love for cooking, shopping, and organizing get-togethers with family and friends was well-known. Her home was a haven of warmth and hospitality, filled with the aroma of her delicious meals and the laughter of loved ones. Shirley's children, who lived out of town, always looked forward to their conversations with her, finding comfort and wisdom in her words.
Shirley's Christian faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and providing her with strength and solace. She found beauty in the world around her, from the vibrant flowers in her garden to the delicate butterflies and the cheerful birds she loved to feed. Her cat, Luann, was a constant companion, and together they enjoyed many quiet moments at home.
Known for her sweet and kind demeanor, Shirley was the epitome of a lady who brought light and love to everyone she met. She was often referred to as a nice and sweet lady. Her presence was a gift to those who had the privilege of knowing her, and she will be deeply missed by all.
