NORTH CLARENDON- We bid farewell to Shirley B. Bruso (Coach) of North Clarendon, VT, whose journey of life concluded on May 14, 2025, at the age of 89. Shirley peacefully passed away in her son's residence in North Clarendon following a brief illness.
She was born on April 28, 1936, in Rutland, the daughter of Norman and Bernice (Small) Baker. She was third in the line of six children.
Shirley graduated from Rutland High School in 1954. She was a high school athlete in Tennis, Field Hockey, Soccer, Softball and Basketball. She was voted Best Athlete and was well known for her ability to make shots from every angle.
A large part of her life was Mill River Union High School. She was employed as a Registrar from 1975 until her retirement in 2008. She was an award-winning, Hall of Fame and dedicated coach to Women's Softball for 28 seasons and Women's Basketball for 23 seasons. In 2018, the MRU softball field was named in her honor. She was one of the most decorated people in the Vermont high school sports arena.
She had many hobbies but her favorite was being involved in her grandchildren's lives and watching them play sports.
She leaves behind her children, Jeffrey Bruso and Timothy Bruso (Amy): grandchildren Kyle Bruso, Mackenzie Bruso and Molly Bruso, a brother Richard Baker, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward Bruso in 1969, a sister Elizabeth "Betty" Kantorski (2002), and brothers Norman (1995), Robert (1993) and Edward Baker (1996).
She created a memorable legacy by impacting so many lives through being a mother, grandmother and a coach.
Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 -7:00 pm on Thursday May 29, 2025, at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland, VT.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday May 30, 2025, at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
