Shirley J. Byron, 84, of Edinburg, ND passed away Saturday, December 28, 2024, at home surrounded by family. Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Edinburg Community Center. Burial will be held at Mountain Cemetery.
Shirley J. Byron was born January 27, 1940, to Torfi and Sigrun (Johnson) Gudmundson. She grew up and attended school in Mountain, ND graduating in 1958. She attended and graduated from Mayville State College. In June 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, Oscar Byron, in Mountain, ND.
Shirley taught in Osnabrock Township, then became a stay-at-home Mom. She later worked at area schools when her family became of school age. She worked at the Edinburg Superette before becoming a PMR for the Edinburg, and later Hoople post offices. She worked for the postal service for over twenty-five years. She very much enjoyed assisting and conversing with her customers, many becoming longtime friends.
She was a member of the Pembina Hills Lutheran Church. After her retirement, she loved to travel, especially to Alaska. Shirley enjoyed playing pinochle, crocheting, flower gardening, crafting, attending concerts, and the occasional gambling excursions. She took immense pride in celebrating family events and attending her children’s, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s activities.
Shirley is survived by her children: Sherri Hurt of Hoople, ND; Kim (Jon) Ness of Devils Lake, ND; Kristi (Tom) Holm of Hoople, ND; John (Terri Nelson) Byron of Fargo, ND; and Kirk (Beth) Byron of Palmer, AK. She was Amma to Michael (Heather) Seim, Shelby (Ryan Lang) Ness, Jordan Seim, MacKenzie (Garret) Schemionek, Zachary (Hailey) Hurt, Lucas Byron, Morgan (Andy) Moe, Andrew Hurt, Katelynn Byron, and Austin Byron. She was Great Amma to Hayden Gehrtz, Tucker Lang, Madelyn Seim, and Krew Schemionek. She was sister-in-law to Marie Simundson and Catherine Byron. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Oscar; her parents; brother Todd Gudmundson; great grandson Oscar Seim; and numerous brothers and sisters in law.
