Shirley A. Carr passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, at the beautiful age of 93. Born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1932, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of James B. and Kathryn (Brady) Halligan and was born at Philadelphia General Hospital.
Shirley married the love of her life, Raymond Carr, who predeceased her. As a proud Army wife, she and Ray moved nearly every three years during his military service. Their journey took them to places such as Panama and Germany, where they built their family and created lifelong memories.
From a young age, Shirley possessed a remarkable work ethic. At just 10 years old, she began helping at a small diner across the street from her South Philadelphia home, cleaning counters, and tables for tips. Those early experiences sparked her lifelong passion for work and independence. Throughout her teenage years, every job she held added to her growing knowledge and confidence in the business world.
In the early 1950s, Shirley began working at the Penn Fruit Company in Philadelphia. Her exceptional mathematical ability and strong business acumen quickly set her apart, earning her several promotions. Even as a young woman in her early twenties, she steadily advanced her career. Her skills with numbers and her leadership ability eventually led her to serve as vice president of a major corporation.
In the late 1960s, while living at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, Shirley learned keypunch and data entry skills, further expanding her professional expertise. When Ray was deployed to Vietnam, Shirley returned to Philadelphia with their children and continued building her career in the financial sector. She worked in payroll and human resources for several companies before being hired by the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. There, she rose to become Vice President of Human Resources, a role she held with distinction until her retirement in the 1990s.
Shirley was always known as the "Matriarch" for advice, counsel, and for her infectious laugh. Whether shaped by her experiences living in different countries and cities or simply by her natural wisdom and compassion, she was a trusted confidante to many. Her kitchen table was often filled with her children and their friends seeking guidance, and she always seemed to know the right thing to say. At the Stock Exchange, her office door was equally welcoming with colleagues frequently stopping by for conversation and advice.
After retiring, Shirley embraced her most treasured role, "Mom Mom" to her grandchildren. She loved attending their birthday parties, sporting events, and social activities. Her home was the heart of family gatherings, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas, when Shirley and Ray's house was truly the place to be.
She cherished her quiet mornings with coffee and crossword puzzles and was an expert at Sudoku and word jumbles. Shirley was also a devoted follower of politics. She could name the senators and members of Congress from nearly every state, staying informed and engaged well into her later years.
A lifelong animal lover, Shirley's home was often filled with fish, rabbits, and rescue dogs. It was not uncommon to be greeted at the door by two or three grateful rescue pets.
Shirley is survived by her four children: Shirley Porter (Barry), Raymond (Colleen), Joyce Stengel (Art), and Timothy. She was blessed with nine grandchildren: Kelly Carr; Raymond III (predeceased); Jill Norman (Bradley): Rae Burnick (Ryan); Arthur III; Julie; Timothy; Barry; and Katie; and two great-grandchildren, Tess and Ava.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Catholic Church of St. Mary, 2001 Springdale Rd, Cherry Hill Township, NJ 08003. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am, at the church. Burial to follow at Lakeview Memorial Park in
Cinnaminson, NJ.
