Obituary of Shirley Ann (Boyum) Carrigan
Shirley Ann (Boyum) Carrigan
Age 92, died February 5, 2025. She was born on May 31, 1932 in St. Paul, MN to Clarence and Alice Boyum. Shirley loved growing up in the Midway area of St. Paul, the oldest of five children.
After graduating from Wilson High School, Shirley enrolled in the Bethesda/Gustavus Nursing Program. As part of this program she took a student nursing position at Moose Lake State Hospital where she met Lloyd. It was a match made in heaven and the beginning of a wonderful life together for almost 59 years. Lloyd and Shirley were married in a civil ceremony in Texas while Lloyd was stationed at the army base. Shirley worked as a labor and delivery nurse. Later, Shirley and Lloyd returned to Minnesota and began their family.
Shirley and Lloyd filled their days and years with fun; Family time at the cabin in Shell Lake, fishing in Canada, wintering in Texas, golfing and card clubs with friends, Wednesday volleyball, travel, church activities and big "messy" family gatherings (always looking for a reason to gather!).
A self proclaimed member of the "Can't Miss a Thing" club, Shirley lived life to the fullest. Refusing to use age or other life challenges as an excuse, Shirley organized, showed up and participated. Her sincere interest and curiosity in others made people feel valued and welcomed. Shirley brought people together, whether it was staying connected to cousins, neighbors and friends through Facebook, organizing the Lutefisk Dinner and coffee gatherings with beloved church friends, playing Bridge, showing up at grandkids' events, organizing alumni events for her nursing friends, hosting family holidays or sharing her beautiful Shell Lake cabin, Shirley made it happen. Shirley's goal was "to find joy and love in every day".
Shirley was preceded in death by daughters, Becky Jo and Katie, husband Lloyd, brother Ken, brother-in-law Bob Durband, daughter-in-law, Sue and her parents. She will be deeply missed by her children Steve (Laurie), Bob (Susan) and Mike (Lisa); grandchildren, Alison, Molly, Bobby (Amanda), Becky (Pete), Dan, Jacob, Lindsay, Marcus (Christi) Jared, Lydia; great-grandchildren, Carmen, Veda, Etta, Elsie, Mila, Audrey, Eleanor, Shirley, Maggie, Link, Emory, Louise, and Frankie; and siblings, Darlene (Bob), John (Mary Ellen) and Joan and many relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 18 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3920 North Victoria Street, Shoreview (651-483-5419) 10:00 Visitation, 11:00 Funeral, with luncheon following. Private Interment at Lutheran Memorial Cemetery, Hinckley. Memorials preferred to the church.
