Shirley Marie Chaisson, a resident of Lafayette, Louisiana was born on January 28, 1937, to Paul Martin and Mary Milson. She transitioned peacefully on the morning of August 15, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.
Shirley attended Southern University, University of California and earned her music degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She practiced her passion and became a revered educator with the Lafayette Parish School System for over 30 years before retiring in May 2002. Once retired, Shirley, always an energetic woman, took the opportunity to return to the classroom as a substitute teacher for St. Martin Parish Schools thus continuing to practice her two loves, music education and teacher to appreciative students. In her spare time, you could find her reading, gardening, solving crossword puzzles and always with music in the air. Shirley was a musician who loved all genres of music but was particularly fond of the sounds of Jazz. Friends and family could always count on enjoying her sense of humor and her incredibly contagious laugh.
She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and actively supported the Lafayette/St. Martin Alumni Chapter of Grambling State University. She faithfully attended Adoration for decades. She was an avid bowler and she bowled in a league for many decades.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Ronnie (Charlotte) Chaisson of Lafayette, LA, daughter, Denise Chaisson of Lafayette, LA, sister, Sandra Milson of Lafayette, LA, grandsons, Byron Tyler Chaisson, Korey (Pamela) Robinson, great grandsons, Bryce and Braylon Robinson, Jamison Chaisson and great granddaughter Charisma Collins, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by Paul Martin and Mary Milson (parents), Byron Keith Chaisson (son), Milton Chaisson (former husband), Kurtis Robinson (grandson), Reggie Robinson (great grandson), and Barbara Milson (sister).
