Shirley Coons Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Louisiana Funeral Services & Crematory - Broussard on Mar. 20, 2026.
Shirley Delahoussaye Coons, born on August 3, 1945, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at the age of 80.

We find comfort in knowing that she has been reunited with the love of her life, her beloved husband of 21 years, Richard Howard Coons, with whom she shared a love so rare and enduring, a bond that continues beyond this life.

A lifelong resident of New Iberia, Louisiana, Shirley was born to the late Dudley and Inez Schaubert Delahoussaye. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Delahoussaye (surviving, Cheryl) and Barry Delahoussaye (surviving, Roxanne).

She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Penny Coons Domingue (late, Terry), David "Buddy" Coons (Nancy), Tavis Coons (Deidra), and Maggie Coons Hartwell (Frank). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Brooke, Killian, Richard, Micha, Shawn, Bryson, Kellie, Gage, Tate, and Kali; and a cherished great-grandmother to Donovan, Brayleigh, Ja'Quialen, Jr., Keilyn, Jonathan, Kameron, Bladen, Brayson, Bronson, Briggs, Blaikely, and Liam; and great-great-grandmother to Koah.

She is also survived by her loving siblings: Ronnie Delahoussaye (Glenda "Tit-tit"), Gerald Delahoussaye (Phyllis), Dwayne Delahoussaye (Sarita), Ward Delahoussaye (Becky), and her sister, Beverly LeBlanc (Dean).

Shirley found her greatest joy in the simple blessings of life; time spent with her family, sharing meals at her favorite restaurants, or enjoying a little excitement at the casino. In her younger years, she loved playing bourrée and making memories filled with laughter. She had a naturally joyful spirit, always wearing a smile and carrying a lighthearted, happy demeanor that made her a true pleasure to be around.

Kind-hearted and generous, Shirley gave freely of herself and loved deeply. Above all, she lived for her children and grandchildren, who were the center of her world and her greatest pride. To know her was to be loved by her, and any moment spent in her presence was truly a treasure.

Her love leaves a mark that time cannot erase, and she will forever be carried in the hearts of those who were blessed to call her their own and though her chair may now sit empty, her laughter, her love, and the warmth she brought into every room will echo in the lives of her family forever.
