Shirley Mae Denevan
RAPID CITY - Shirley Mae Denevan passed away peacefully Friday, December 15, 2023 at the age of 91.
She was born May 14, 1932 to Harry and Mary Washburn in DeSmet, SD and was the youngest of four children. In 1949 she married Don Denevan and they settled in Rapid City where they raised their two daughters, Ronalda and Janet. Shirley was a long time member of the VFW Auxiliary. For a time she was employed by Black Hills Ammo as an ammunition inspector and enjoyed many friendships. When her daughters were young, she played piano in church for the junior choir. She loved to dance. Early in her marriage, Don and Shirley enjoyed square dancing, then later ballroom dancing. Saturday night dances were still a highlight of her week into her 80's! Shirley also loved to walk and was often seen walking in her neighborhood and handing out treats to the dogs. Some people may know she loved pigs and even had one as a pet for a short while! Her grandchildren brought her much joy and she was always there for them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and her husband, Don.
She is survived by her two daughters, Ronalda (Dan) Driscoll and Janet (Pat) Divan; six grandkids: Amy (Jon) Voyles, Kent (Christina) Jacobs, Tony (Heather) Divan, Todd (Kathleen) Jacobs, Carly (Ben) Loper, Tilly (Tom ) Houghton; twelve great-grandkids: Austin, Logan, Tommy, Alexa, Vance, Hazel, Jasmine, Stella, Christian, Zoey, Henry, Micah and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service at burial at Black Hills National Cemetery, on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Please visit the online memorial for Shirley at www.kirkfuneralhome.com
