Shirley Marie Toppin Kirby, 85, of Tyner, NC, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in her home.
Ms. Kirby was born in Gates County on August 24, 1939, and was the daughter of the late Nolan Bunch Toppin and Jennie Virginia Parker Toppin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Lillie Mae Beaman and Hazel Spruill, brothers, Larry, Haurice, Maurice, Troy, Durwood, Guy, Wilford, and Garland Toppin, and by two grandsons, Dustin Ryan and William Roscoe Kirby.
The co-owner and operator of Kirby’s Electrical for over 30 years, one of her specialties while there included antique lamp repair. Through the years she enjoyed fellowship in both Edenton and Center Hill Baptist churches. Other past membership included the NC National Guard Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving is her daughter, Rhonda Kirby Charles (Cameron) of Jacksonville, FL; her son, Paul Kirby of Tyner; a brother, Earl Toppin of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Justin and Alyssa Kirby, and Dylan Charles; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, and will be conducted by the Rev. Joey Nixon. Friends may visit with the family at the gravesite immediately following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
