Joan Proctor Lane

Joan Proctor Lane, 85, of 2645 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Lane was born in Perquimans County on December 3, 1939, and was the daughter of the late Louis Linwood and Nellie Mae Lane Proctor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lee Lane, her son-in-law, J.E. Matthews, a brother, L.C. Proctor, and a sister, Norma Lane.

A 1960 graduate of Perquimans County High School, she retired as a cashier from Big Star Supermarket following 17 years of employment and later worked with Captain Bob’s for many years. She was a member of Burgess Baptist Church.

Surviving is her daughter, Karole Matthews; a son, Duncan Lane, both of Hertford; a brother, Thomas “Pete” Proctor of Virginia; a grandson, Edward Lee “Eddie” Matthews (girlfriend, Colleen Turner); and other extended family members.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. A private burial will be in the Harrell Family Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Monday and other times at the residence.
