Mrs. Shirley Ann Cleary Mahaffey
Shirley Cleary Mahaffey passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. She was 88 years old. Shirley was born on May 10, 1937, to Howard C. and Reba H. Cleary of Sylvania, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Efton Ralph (Mac) Mahaffey. Also preceding her in death are a brother, Charles C. Cleary, and a sister, Elise Cleary Blanton. She is survived by two children, Angel (Joey) McBride of Sylvania and Clay (Teri) Mahaffey of Brunswick, Georgia. Her family also included four grandchildren, Macay (Dru) McBride, Brooke (Drake) Collins, Evan Mahaffey, and Raven Mahaffey. She was known as Grandma Sam to five great-grandchildren: Stone, Stella, Malley, Clare, and Archer. Shirley lived most of her life in Sylvania and was the owner of WSYL Radio. She started her career in radio in 1957 as the secretary of WSYL and later purchased the radio station. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Screven County Memorial Cemetery at 3:00 PM. Remembrances may be made to Student Ministries of Sylvania First Methodist Church or Ogeechee Area Hospice.
