Shirley Moss, age 78, passed away June 5, 2025. She was born August 24, 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the youngest child of Carl and Eunice (Rowe) Peacock. She was a self-described curious child, always watching her father work on his shrimp boat or tinker and repair just about anything that was put in front of him. For those who knew Shirley, you know that she too seemed to have a knack for tinkering with things and making them better. She could see the potential in just about anything, and had the grit and determination to transform things into something usable or beautiful that others might simply overlook. She was a person who always left things better than she found them and she was not afraid of hard work.
Shirley met and married her husband, Jack, in 1963 in Pascagoula, Mississippi where the couple lived until a fateful Sunday drive in 1969 would lead them to George County, Mississippi, and in particular to the Movella community, where the young couple stopped at a country store (Lamb's) for something cold to drink. While in the store, Shirley and Jack asked the owners (who would later become dear friends), if they knew of anyone who might have a house and land for sale in the area, because the community looked like the perfect place to raise a family. And as luck would have it, the store owners did, in fact, know of a place for sale just two miles from the store. Shirley and Jack bought that place and raised 3 children, Dewayne, Kim, and Gina there.
Shirley was a homemaker for the first few years of her marriage, but in the mid 1970's she went back to school to become a cosmetologist and operated her own beauty shop next door to her home in Movella for several years. On weekends, Shirley and her girls participated in pageants as their hobby. Shirley even organized pageants for different groups, as fundraisers. And through that, Shirley found her next business, which was as a custom trophy and awards maker.
Shirley started her trophy business, Trophies and Things, on Main Street in Lucedale, where she designed and created custom awards for local ball teams, pageants, churches, and schools for many years. The "Trophy Shop" as it became affectionately known as, was also a hub for friends, family, and customers to stop by for a good cup of coffee and conversation any time the doors were open.
In the late 1990s, Shirley, always a continuous learner who loved trying new things, sold her trophy business. It was time to try something different. Over the next few years, Shirley renovated a historic home in Agricola, worked at a local cabinet shop, took a business/computer class at the local community college, was a "fire watch" at the Chevron Plant in Pascagoula, and traveled the country as an assistant to her cousin (and chosen sister), Vanessa, who was a major storms insurance adjuster.
Shirley was a wonderful friend, the kind who made you feel welcome, no matter what you had or didn't have. She was the kind of woman who would give you the shirt off of her back, if you needed it, without ever mentioning it to you again. She was hard working, smart, honest, dependable, spontaneous, prepared, fun, caring, imperfect (and would be the first to admit that), and down to earth. She was the kind of mother to her children that anyone would be blessed to have. She was so loved, and she will be so missed. Today, we celebrate her and a life well lived.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Moss; son, Jack Dewayne Moss; mother, Eunice Huddleston; father, Carl Peacock; siblings, Carl Peacock Jr, James Peacock, and Dorothy Peacock.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Kim Moss and Gina (Ted) Roman; grandchildren, Kaleigh Boyd, Kristin Moss, Stephanie Butler, Jane Roman, Trent Dickerson, Joey Dickerson, Brandon Roman, and Davey Roman; great grandchildren, Laylah Boyd, Micheal Boyd, Millie Satcher, Everleigh Dickerson, Watson Dickerson, and Waylon Dickerson; sister-in-law, Mamie Moss; numerous other relatives and friends.
