Shirley Deogracias Naquin, a beloved figure in her family and community, was born on November 1, 1942, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, in St. Tammany Parish, surrounded by her family.
Shirley, or affectionately known as Mama, MawMaw and Aunt Shirley to the ones she held dear, knew how to make everyone feel special and loved and told great stories to anyone who listened. She was a dedicated Pet Partners Volunteer, sharing her pride and joy, Lizzie, with older folks at nursing homes. She cherished the moments spent volunteering and made a positive impact on many lives. Shirley enjoyed doing life with her loving husband and companion of 65 years, Van (bae), traveling with her family, indulging in shopping trips, dancing, visiting candy shops and bakeries, and acquiring collectibles. She raised her family in St. Bernard Parish before retiring to Mandeville, Louisiana for the past 20 years, enjoying quality time with her loved ones and beloved dogs.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Van Joseph Naquin; her daughters, Belinda Johnson (Adrian), Melissa Margaret Naquin; and her siblings, Cynthia Deogracias Smith (Roy) and George Milton Theaux (Susan). Shirley also had a circle of grandchildren who adored her: Ansley Johnson Gwyn (Kevin), Garrett Rondal Johnson, Austin Van Johnson (Hailey), Veronica Patrice Clark, and Luke Jacob Clark. Her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren, Caleb Sahil Gwyn, Hattie Caroline Johnson, Harper Charlotte Johnson, Cora Sanyukta Gwyn, and Hudson Van Johnson.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Herbert Deogracies, her mother, Louise Latapie, and her sister, Anna Deogracias Long.
She will be remembered for her warm spirit, generous heart, and the countless ways she brightened the lives of those around her. Shirley's life was one of love, laughter, and devotion, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
