Raleigh, NC and former husband John. She is Blessed with Grandchildren Brittany (Peck) Webb and husband Daniel, Chason Peck and Wife Heather, Conrad Simon, and Courtney Starovasnik and husband Caleb. Great-grandchildren Ramey, Addison, and Jace, Webb, Mckinley and Kelbie Peck. Shirley and Bill celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary of a very Blessed life together in June 2025.
Shirley was a member of Bay leaf Baptist Church for over 40 years and served in several committees, sang in the sanctuary choir, and led many services with her musical talent. She was in the Scott Sunday School class during this time and hosted warm and cheerful annual Chili Party's in their home along with Choir Socials. Shirley was blessed with a musical talent of playing music by ear. She blessed so many with this remarkable talent by playing sing-a-longs wherever people were gathered. It brought joy to the fullest as people around the room would call out the name of a song and she would play it, most of the time without anyone even giving a note. Shirley used this talent during her time as a volunteer at Springmoor Retirement and Life Care Center where she received a volunteer of the Year award for 30 years of service. For many of those years, she also led a senior's band that served as the entertainment at many other church and civic events.
Shirley and her beloved husband Bill established a vacation retreat in Lake Placid, Forida where they enjoyed many seasons with three generations of family and wonderful friends. They celebrated the 50-year anniversary of this special site in 2024. She spent her time nurturing grandchildren, nature watching, neighbor
visits, riding her bike and taking strolls around the neighborhood. and rowing her boat out on calm lake days. She enjoyed hosting company as well as watching quiet remarkable sunsets with Bill by her side.
During their years together, they enjoyed traveling. They found memorable experiences in Jamaica, Bahamas, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, and several countries in Europe. As long as they were together, it didn't matter where they were.
Shirley's high school yearbook shared a quote from Elizabeth Browning's poem My Kate "twas her thinking of others that made you think of her," which characterizes Shirley' life well. She wanted to be remembered by this quote from Erma Bombeck, "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, "I used everything you gave me".
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 10-11am, at Bay Leaf Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 11am. Burial will follow in the Church's cemetery.
The service will be live streamed for those that cannot attend at unlisted.bayleaf.org.
