AKWESASNE – Shirley A. Phillips, 70, peacefully passed away Tuesday evening, September 30, 2025 at her home with the love and support of her family at her side.

Shirley was born in Cornwall on January 29, 1955, the daughter of the late Abraham and Susan (Hemlock) Phillips. She was raised by her aunt, Mary Hemlock Garrow, who also predeceased her. She attended schools in Syracuse before returning back to the Reservation, where she attended Salmon River Central School. She continued her education at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall taking courses in business and finance. She shared a companionship with Peter Terrance for many years until their separation.

Shirley first worked as a bus driver for New York State before starting a career in the finance department of Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, where she worked for over 30 years. She also sold AVON for many years. She was a member of the Tri-District Elders and enjoyed bowling.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Tanya Oakes; her granddaughters, Alana Oakes McCumber, Allie Oakes McCumber (Louie David), and Brittany Oakes McCumber; her great grandchildren, Odin and Eden; her sisters, Sandra Phillips and Elizabeth "Betty" Benedict; her brother, Vaughn (Lynelle) Phillips; her sister-in-laws, Florence and Irene Phillips; her godchildren, Damon Oakes, Joni Sarah White, and Cassandra Phillips; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Terry (Mary Lou) Phillips, Leslie, Allen, Bruce Phillips, her brother-in-law, Edwin Benedict; and her godson, Noah Point.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena where friends may call Thursday 5-8:00 PM and Friday 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM and 5-8:0 PM. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Lisa Jock, officiating.
