Shirley ReQua Obituary

Shirley A. Scahill ReQua

Webster - At the age of 94, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 24th at home with loved ones. Shirley is predeceased by her husband of 72-1/2 years Donald ReQua, both lifelong residents of Monroe County (except during World War II). The last of her generation, she is also predeceased by her parents, all her siblings, and brothers-in-law.

She leaves her three daughters, Donna Marie Ecker, Margaret (Joseph) DeFrancisco, Michelle ReQua; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; many nieces and nephews; a host of friends and neighbors.

She was born and raised in Rochester in a large Irish family. She married the man of her dreams during World War II in 1943 in Tampa, Florida where Don was stationed with the Army Air Corps.

They were among the many post World War II families who moved to the suburbs in the 1950s. They moved to Webster and lived for 63 years in the house that Don built. Shirley also worked for the Town of Webster for many years.

Shirley loved everything Irish and was extraordinarily proud of her ancestry. In her waning days of life, she was known to sing favorite Irish melodies fully and robustly. She loved to travel and made three trips to Ireland in her lifetime.

A community and church volunteer her entire adult life, she was an active parishioner at St. Rita's Church, and an elections inspector every primary and election day for over 25 years.

She loved golf and had an excellent short game, especially with her putter. She and Don were great followers of the LPGA, and she volunteered at the local tournament for over two decades.

She was active in the Knights of St. John Auxiliary, and was for many years on the drill team, traveling to competitions around the country.

The family is ever grateful to Debbie Lillie, Recreation Director at the Highlands Living Center for her devoted attention to Shirley during COVID.
