Winterville – Shirley Hollingsworth White went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 19th 2024.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 pm in the Smith Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Shirley was born in Lenoir County on February 16th, 1936, to Essie and Steve Shiver, but called Pitt County her home for most of her life.
Shirley was a woman of quiet strength, at times working multiple jobs to support her three boys, whom she loved deeply. She worked as a bookkeeper for most of her adult life, retiring from Greenville Christian Academy. She also enjoyed working as a hostess at Dixie Queen, where she greeted everyone as if they were a friend. She has been a longtime member of People's Baptist Church and made many cherished friendships there. Anyone who knew her knew she showed her love through cooking-baking a cake for a friend, cooking meals for her family and even passing down recipes to the next generation. She has said she loves to "see things grow," whether that was vegetables in the garden, flowers blooming in her yard, or her beloved family. She had a heart for others, loved her family fiercely and took great pride in being Grandma Shirley.
She was preceded in death by infant son John Hollingsworth Jr., son Mark Hollingsworth, sister Linda Harper and her husband Claude White.
She is survived by son David Hollingsworth and wife Dana; grandchildren Jordan Hollingsworth and Ryan Covey and husband Dallis; great grandchildren, Tyson and Harper; son Paul Hollingsworth and wife Candace; and grandchildren Bailey and Hunter Hollingsworth. In addition to her immediate family, she will be missed by extended family in the Kinston area, church family, and lifelong friends.
The family would like to thank those neighbors who have helped out over recent years and become special friends, as well as Angie Harden, who has been a faithful caregiver.
