Shirley Mabry Stubbs, 96, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Ashburn, Virginia. She was born on July 21, 1929, in Quincy, Illinois, to Prentis and Margaret Mabry. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene W. "Stubby" Stubbs, and her sister, Carol J. Mabry. Shirley is survived by her son, Brian W. Stubbs, daughter-in-law Kristin S. Stubbs, grandchildren Shannon (Matthew) Cronan, Ryan Stubbs, Sean Stubbs, and Devin Stubbs, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy and pride. A lifelong Washingtonian, Shirley moved with her family to Washington, D.C. in 1930, where she attended Western High School and George Washington University. Her career as a secretary for the U.S. government was notable, but it was her role as a grandmother that filled her heart with the deepest joy. Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Grandma the Great," a title she wore with honor. Shirley's life was defined by her strong faith and love for music. A charter member of Briggs Memorial Baptist Church in Bethesda, MD, she remained active in the congregation even after it merged with Westmoreland United Church of Christ. She was an accomplished pianist and singer, passionately involved with the Sweet Adelines International, a women's barbershop chorus and quartet singing organization. Music was a constant in her life and a source of deep connection for her. Shirley and her husband were avid travelers, making numerous trips both domestically and internationally. One of the highlights of their travels was when Stubby was named First International President of the WBCCI International Airstream Club, and Shirley proudly served as the First Lady of the club. She had a deep love for the open road and the sense of community within the Airstream family. In addition to her many personal passions, Shirley devoted countless hours to volunteer work. She was particularly involved with Martha's Table, serving others and making a lasting impact in her community. Shirley's legacy is one of love, service, and music. She lived her life with grace, kindness, and an unwavering devotion to her family, church, and the many people whose lives she touched. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at The Farmwell Hall at Ashby Ponds, Ashburn, VA, with the date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Shirley's memory to Martha's Table and Capital Caring Health.
