Shirley Ann Tropea, a cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on June 2, 1934, Shirley's journey through life was characterized by her unwavering dedication to her family and her remarkable career.
A proud graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School in Columbus, Shirley furthered her education and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University. Her compassion and commitment to helping others led her to a fulfilling 29-year career as a social worker with Summit County Social Services, and in addition, she was actively involved in supporting an orphanage in Tanzania where she made lasting impacts on the lives of many.
Shirley's love for her family was evident in all that she did. She is survived by her devoted children: son Dante Tropea; daughter Anne Tropea; son Anthony Tropea; son Ralph Tropea; and daughter Renee (Dave) Proudfoot. Her legacy continues through her six beloved grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life.
Shirley is preceded in death by her father, Edwin J. Melancon; mother, C. Louise Melancon; and brother, David Melancon. Her life, filled with kindness and love, has left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered, and she will be deeply missed.
In addition to her family life, Shirley was an active member of St. Phillip and James Catholic Church and the Secular Franciscans, where she found community and fellowship. Her warm spirit and caring nature will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
