Sidney Cook Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crawford Lorenzen Mortuary - Northridge on Apr. 16, 2025.
Sidney Cook was born on January 12, 1947 in Colon, Panama, to Iris May Cook and Sidney Oliver Cook. He had six siblings and was known affectionately as 'Junior.' Growing up in Colon, he graduated from Abel Bravo de Colon High School and developed a passion for technical work from a young age.
In his teenage years, Sidney's interest in electronics blossomed while working at his brother Eustaces TV shop. After high school, he embarked on a career in maritime and technical industries, working on commercial ships and later for the Panama Canal.
In 1970, he had his first son Dionisio, born in Colon.
In 1972, Sidney emigrated from Panama to New York City. He was a brilliant information and communications technician. The companies he worked for included Pacific Bell, Verizon, MCI, and AT&T. In 1973, Sidney had his second son Dwayne, born in Brooklyn, NY. In 1975 Emanuel was born in Manhattan. In 1977, Sidney moved to California. In 1978, Simone was born in Harlem, New York.
While employed at Pacific Bell, Sidney met Phyllis Bell through mutual friends. In February 1984, they married and her son Divine became Sidneys stepson. In 1985, Sidney and Phyllis had another son, Fabian. Sidney was with his beloved wife, Phyllis, for more than 40 years. Sidney's love extended beyond his immediate family, as he welcomed over seven foster children into their home over the years.
Sidney was not only a devoted family man but also a man of diverse interests. He had a discerning palate, enjoying cuisines from Latin American and the Caribbean among others. His musical tastes included soca, latin music, hip hop and classical, reflecting the richness of his experiences. Sidney had a deep love for travel, always yearning to explore new destinations. He enjoyed attending the annual Caribbean parades in Brooklyn to celebrate his West Indian and Panamanian roots.
Mechanical work held a special place in Sidney's heart, whether it was tinkering with electronics or indulging in his passion for cars. He was an avid reader, delving into technical manuals, social commentary, and spiritual texts alike.
Sidney will be remembered by his loved ones for his practicality, humor, and dedication to his family. While he may not have always expressed his love verbally, his actions spoke volumes, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
In Sidney's absence, his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community. As we gather to honor his memory, we reflect on the multifaceted man Sidney was and the profound love he shared with all who knew him. Though he may no longer be with us, his presence will be deeply missed, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
