Sidney E. Holcombe, Jr. (Retired Msgt.)

Sidney Edwin Holcombe, Jr., known affectionately as Sid, passed on October 29, 2023, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Surrounded by his loving family, Sid peacefully bid farewell to this world. He was born on September 19, 1947, in Buffalo, Union County, South Carolina to the late Sidney Edwin and Lillian Zimmerman Holcombe.

Sid lived a remarkable life filled with various experiences and accomplishments. After graduating from Union High School in 1966, he embarked on a journey of service by joining the U.S. Air Force. With unwavering dedication and perseverance, Sid served his country for over 20 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant.
Sid's first love was the Air Force until he met the love of his life, Faye Jean Davis of Gastonia.
Following his retirement from the military, Sid found purpose and fulfillment in new avenues of work. He dedicated himself to serving others at Gaston Correctional Institute in Dallas and also a Probation/Parole Officer North Carolina Department of Correction. Sid's commitment to helping people extended beyond his professional life; he was involved with various charitable organizations and selflessly offered his time and resources to those in need. His life was about “Service” he was active in Cub Scouts-serving as Cubmaster. He also served in school activities especially Ashbrook High School Band. He served as a volunteer Fireman and was a member of the Redman. His fondest memories are serving as Santa Clause, also at kindergarten.

However, amidst all of Sid's achievements and commitments, his proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly spending time with his family. A fun-loving husband and father, he cherished every moment shared with them. His wife of almost 50 years, Faye Davis Holcombe, stood by his side through thick and thin, providing unwavering love and support throughout their journey together. Sid's wonderful children - Sidney E. "Trey" Holcombe III and wife Deane, Christopher Willis Holcombe and fiancée Erin, and Jeanna Lynn Holcombe, and his furbaby, April - brought him immense joy and pride. Their bond was unbreakable and filled with countless memories that will be treasured forever.

Among the many joys of Sid's life were his beloved grandson, Benjamin, step-grandchildren, Jake and Hunter. He adored them unconditionally and found pure happiness in watching them grow and thrive. Sid's love for his grandchildren knew no bounds, and they brought a special light into his life.

Sid's warm personality and kind-hearted nature endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a zest for life that was infectious, spreading joy wherever he went. Sid possessed an incredible ability to make everyone around him feel valued and loved, and his loyal friendships were a testament to his character.

The legacy of Sidney E. Holcombe, Jr. will live on through the memories shared by family and friends. He leaves behind devoted wife Faye, his children Trey, Christopher, Jeanna Lynn, his grandson, Benjamin, and step-grandchildren, Jake and Hunter.
Services to honor Sid's life will be held at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation in Gastonia. The visitation will take place on November 3, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Life service will follow on November 4, 2023, starting at 1:00 PM. in the Chapel with Pastor Dale Lawing officiating. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Veteran section with military honors by the U. S. Air Force.

Sid touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity. His memory will forever remain etched in our hearts as we commemorate a life well-lived and a soul deeply loved.
