It was with great sadness that I learned of Sye's passing. I now live in Texas and haven't seen Sye for a number of years but in our youth (many years ago) Sye and his older brother, Shelby, were close friends with my brother, Dickie, and me. The friendships go back to the 1950's when the LaSalle family owned a neighborhood grocery on Jefferson Hwy in "Old" Jefferson. As youngsters, we all served together in the make-believe "Junior Army Club" under the capable leadership of Sye's older brother, "General Shelby LaSalle". My brother and Shelby were the same age and they were the generals. Sye and I were younger, and we were Buck Privates and we stuck together, always seeking a promotion in rank.
At times the Junior Army Club held meetings in the large chicken coup owned by Sye's Dad and we did our military marching in the LaSalle's back yard. The close friendships lasted through high school until the LaSalle's family moved from "Old" Jefferson to Lacombe, La. My business transfers out of state interrupted my friendship connection with Sye.
In those good old days, other neighborhood buddies and I were all very fond of Sye's Mom and Dad and we all enjoyed hanging out with Sye and Shelby in their parent's grocery store. I have many fond memories of the wonderful LaSalle family and my very close friendship with Sye. Sye was always thoughtful, considerate, fun to pal around with and a great all-around friend.
My profound sympathies are extended to Sye's family and may my old friend rest in peace.
