Perry Louis Cookmeyer, 65, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025. He was born October 27, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Ralph Joseph Cookmeyer Sr. and the late Barbara Joyce Funck Cookmeyer, both of New Orleans. Perry grew up on Avenue B in Lakeview, surrounded by family (literally up and down the block) with his brothers Ralph J. Cookmeyer Sr., Randy J. Cookmeyer and the late Robert H. Cookmeyer. He attended Lakeview Kindergarten, John Diebert Elementary School, Beauregard Junior High School and John F. Kennedy High School; he also attended Louisiana State University and the University of New Orleans.

Perry’s career started with M.G. Maher & Co., continued with McDermott International and then with a local physician’s office. He enjoyed numerous organizations and activities throughout his life, from supporting all activities for the schools his children attended to volunteering for organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). As a member of the John F. Kennedy High School Alumni Association, he was active in organizing class reunions for many years. One of his most fulfilling positions was as a chaperone for student tours to Europe for 10 years—he enjoyed getting to know the new high school graduates and staying in touch with many of them throughout the years.

Perry married the former Lisa Ann Fernandez in 1984 and settled in the New Orleans area. Following the birth of his son, Eric James, Perry began the toughest job of his life as a stay-at-home dad (in a time when there were none) and continued this undertaking with the birth of his daughter, Evann Michelle. He supported Lisa in her career and planned wonderful adventures—mostly abroad—with his family.

Recently, Perry had the thrill of becoming Grandad to Ellis James Cookmeyer, son of Eric and his wife, Morgan Laurent Cookmeyer, and spent countless hours holding and loving on Ellis.

He was also the committed godfather of five of his nephews and nieces: Christopher Cookmeyer, Brittany Cookmeyer Tanner, Adam Cookmeyer, Blake Cookmeyer and Bailey Cookmeyer.

Perry’s greatest gift was to care for loved ones and friends who were very ill or at the end of their lives—graciously supporting them and their loved ones through these difficult times with empathy and gentleness. Many were blessed by Perry’s wonderful ability to maneuver the challenges faced going through this experience.

A memorial service will be held at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church on September 6, 2025.

A private burial will be held at the Fernandez-Cookmeyer House in Roads, County Kerry, Ireland. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Southeast Louisiana (namisela.org).
