Sofia Marie Farto Araujo, formerly of Nutley, NJ, passed away on June 21, 2024. Born to Carla and Antonio Araujo on July 17, 2002, Sofia was a passionate and caring soul to all those around her. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. She is survived by her beloved parents, Antonio J. Araujo and Carla A. Araujo; devoted sister, Sara Araujo; loving maternal grandparents, Carlos and Albina Farto. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Jose Araujo and Gloria Sousa.
Sofia's life was enriched through service, her creativity, and kindness. She was a graduate of Nutley High School in 2020 and went on to study psychology at the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA. To be surrounded by nature, immersed in a book, was where Sofia found solitude. Whether it was a walk or a drive, the time she spent in nature was peaceful to her. A lover of baking, pottery, and sewing, Sofia found beauty in life's simple moments and inspired those around her to do the same. Sofia loved animals, becoming vegan as a child, and rescued two animals, Scout and Pepper, during college. Sofia has left an ineffable mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A service celebrating Sofia's life will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2024 from 2-6 pm in the Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068, shookfarmer.com, for friends and family. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, July 8, 2024 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Newark, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, a cause which was close to her heart, are appreciated.

i met Sofia through Rachel at Rachel´s birthday party, and i am endlessly lucky to have had the chance to make memories with her throughout my senior year of college. she´s the most active of listeners, an incredibly genuine and caring person. she was a doting cat mom to pepper (luella cruella - she had an insanely long and well-crafted name), and i could tell because pepper is literally the most playful, sweet, outgoing, and trusting cat i have ever met. Sofia always paid so much attention to those around her, always making sure that everyone felt happy, safe, and comfortable, showing care in the smallest of details: being in her presence was truly a gift.

Sofia and i bonded through our love of books and psychoanalysis and dressing up and making things. she was the kind of creative visionary where there was truly no limit to her creations: Sofia loved to bake, crochet, paint, mould clay, craft outfits, and decorate - literally anything. her room was the cutest i had ever seen. there was literally always a new one-of-a-kind Sofia creation whenever i went over to her and rachel´s apartment. she´s definitely the coolest person to ever walk this earth, in addition to being the most aesthetic and kind. i know i´m preaching to the choir, but all i wish is for more time, more crafting sessions, more conversations, more getting ready pregames, more gatherings, more Sofia

Sof, i miss you dearly

I still remember the first day I met Sof. I can still see her sitting on my dorms couch freshman year. At the time we weren´t super close but I vividly remember going to her dorm one day and the bus I was supposed to take being late. We sat and talked and I instantly knew, just that gut feeling you get, that she was someone I would have in my life forever. I´m so happy that that bus was late. I struggled finding my people and place at Athens but she was always a rock in my life. I´m so grateful we were able to get closer over the years. When I moved in with her our senior year I told her that this was the first year I truly enjoyed being in Athens and the biggest reason was her. She was my best friend, my confidant, and my partner in crime in cookie dough runs. I can still see her everywhere. In the kitchen baking bread, trying to make almond free macaroons for me, or cooking red rice. She always loved to bake. Her knitting and crocheting on the couch. Us sitting watching Uhhhh with Trixie and Katya or Rupauls or just reality shows. Hosting our first get together. On the balcony where we would sit with our Thai food haul and talk for hours.
She inspired me every day: her resilience and determination, her passion, and her kindness. Whenever we saw someone needing help Sof was always right next to me jumping in. She loved animals and was always so gentle with Scout and Pepper. Sof was love. Everything she did was pouring love and kindness. She was absolutely brilliant. A writer that would make any author jealous and would pick apart books and lyrics. She never wanted to stop learning and would even want to read my essays for classes. I wish everyone in the world could meet her. She was a sun in my life and would easily radiate into others. She was a fashion icon. She was the only one who could pull off bleached brows like she invented it. She would always find the coolest things in the thrift stores and create outfits of true originality. Any themed party came up I expected her to end up in vogue. Her creativity was endless. She would see something on Pinterest and bring it to life: a martini glass lamp, a sconce of clay with two beautiful swans, vintage picture frames outlining the outlets.

Sof was everything.

Out of everyone who could have been my sister, I am so grateful it was Sofia. I am her older sister by 23 months. Growing up that close in age, fate granted me a built in best friend and inspiration. My parent’s greatest gift to us was our relationship as sisters. We shared the same bedroom, dressed in the same outfits, and even participated in the same extracurriculars. She taught me the meaning of strength and resilience through her actions. As children, I would wheel my sister around in a doll stroller pretending to be her mom. In her, I found the strongest bond (and an amazing second closet.)
Sofia is the most multidimensional person I know, and what a woman she is! My sister has the kindest, most inquisitive, and caring soul. At 12, she became vegan out of her love of animals. In her 21 years of life, she rescued two animals, Scout and Pepper, and touched the lives of countless more. She was an avid creator: baker, knitter, painter, reader, and curator of all things cool. She created freely and without hesitation, beautifying the most mundane of spaces.
Sisters are forever and I would do every life with her. I will forever miss her experimental baked goods, her thrift flips, and the distinctly Sofia scribbles she imparts within every book.
I will always be my sister’s keeper and forever protector. I have faith that she is watching over us all, and one day I can be joined with her once more.

Sofia was my roommate at uga my senior year and she will always be remembered for her love of animals. I remember the night she found Scout was the night before she left for summer break. She came back to the sorority house late the night before with this huge dog she found on the side of the road while on one of her drives. She made sure to get food, a collar, and a place for him to stay before driving him 13 hours up to new jersey. She also fostered a kitten while we lived together. Pepper (Luella) the cat lived an amazing life thanks to sofia, enjoying the fresh air on the porch, gourmet cat food and lots of toys. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and animals this is an incredibly sad an unexpected loss. Sofia had so much more warmth to offer.

Sofia was my "little" in SK and I am so lucky to have met her. We bonded right away both being from the Tristate area, having similar majors, and even being in class together. She was such a beautiful person inside and out. She always made me laugh with her quick remarks and had such a kind and loving nature. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. I am so deeply sorry and saddened for this loss.

Sofia was my "big" in SK and I am so shocked to hear this. She was such a sweet girl and we had so much in common from both being from NJ, both Portuguese, and both named Sofia. She was someone who first welcomed me into the sorority, being someone I knew I can go to for guidance and support through this new experience. She even surprised me and took me to a Pitbull concert. I am praying for the Araujo family and my condolences deeply for this tragic loss. I will miss you my big
