It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sonia Isana Garcia, beloved mother to Christine Isana Garcia, grandmother to Eostrix Samuel Garcia-Freedman, sister to Nelia Camargo and Daisy Reodica, and aunt to Racel Aguila, on February 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Sonia transitioned peacefully into the arms of God at her home in Rochester, NY surrounded lovingly by family.
Sonia touched the lives of so many in her native country, the Philippines, as well as in her adopted home in Rochester, NY. Profoundly Catholic, she devoted her life to service in the name of the Lord through prayer groups and Catholic mass at her home, charity through the many children she supported through their schooling in Japan and the Philippines, and in innumerable acts of grace as she opened her heart and home to those who needed family, whether it was through a listening ear, prayers, a place to stay, and all the countless ways she made everyone she touched feel seen, heard, and loved.
Sonia, or Dr. Garcia to many, spent most of her life doing what she loved. She practiced pediatrics as chief pediatrician and founder of the Garcia Children's Clinic, a children's hospital in her hometown of Lucena City, Philippines. As a pediatrician who did her residency and specialty training in the United States at Boston Children's Hospital and Denver Children's Hospital from 1950-1960, she was able to bring state-of-the-art healing to children and families in Lucena City. Her patients loved her.
In Rochester, she held a solo pediatric practice for 36 years practicing medicine as she felt it should be.with love, care, and expertise, without much worry about a patient's ability to pay for needed healing (much to the chagrin of her accountant). Sonia answered phone calls directly from her patients after hours, held the hands of scared parents whose children were in the hospital, and cared for families beyond her call of duty. She has taken care of countless generations of Rochester families. In her last days, she was cared for by a nurse who was a former patient, and a doctor who was a former resident who trained under her at Strong Memorial Hospital. Sonia was an inspiration to many of her patients as they chose careers in nursing and medicine as a result of her care for them.
Sonia's greatest pride was her family. She adored her grandson who she showered with so much affection. In her final weeks, she was able to tell him how proud she was of him as she learned of his acceptance into a college that he wanted to attend. He gave her absolute joy. Sonia is survived by her daughter Christine, and her grandson Eostrix, of Berkeley, CA; her sisters Nelia of New York City and Daisy and brother-in-law Ronnie of the Philippines; and Racel of Rochester, NY.
Sonia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Efren; her sister Norma; and her parents Ester and Gregorio.
Her legacy of kindness, resilience, faith, and love will live on in the very many whose lives she touched.
Friends may call Wednesday (Feb 12th) 4-7 PM at Vay-Schleich and Meeson, 1075 Long Pond Road. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday (Feb 13th) 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park. Entombment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

I am just seeing this unfortunately! Dr. Garcia will always hold a special place in my family's hearts! She was the reason my 5 mo old was diagnosed and treated for a very rare seizure disorder quickly and efficiently, which made her outcome a HUGE success! We will forever be grateful for Dr. Garcia!!! We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Garcia´s passing! She was the most wonderful Doctor to our 2 sons now 36 and 30. It was a sad time when we had to leave her office because they had become grown adults. There was no one like her!
Our condolences to all who loved her, especially her daughter and grandson.

Dr. Garcia was a wonderful pediatrician, she took care of both of my children now ages 37 & 34. She cared for the children like each one was her own. So many fond memories of conversations with her, always there to lend an ear and offer guidance regardless of the situation. Sending thoughts and prayers to her family.

I was so saddened to hear about Dr. Garcia. My mom was one of her nurses at her practice. I used to visit often and she would let me sit in her office and read her medical books. She was a wonderful and kind person. Sending hugs and condolences to Christine and the rest of her family,

To Sonia´s family- my prayers are with you. I was a colleague of your Mother´s and always thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her patients. She took such great care of them. Back in the day, I always enjoyed talking with her about our mutual patients. She was one of a kind.
Again, I´m so sorry for your profound loss.

Dr. Garcia was my children´s pediatrician. We started going to her at her practice on Fetzner Road. I LOVED her practice and her way of practicing medicine. What a loss . Thinking of her family.

My wife, Edith, and I am sad to hear of Sonia´s passing. She was the first Filipina we came to know when Kodak relocated me to Rochester. Her welcoming nature is rare to a Filipino. She did not became only a close friend, and family doctor but also became Marianne´s Godmother. Marianne is grateful for providing her medical needs and advices which probably influenced her to study in the medical field. Sonia´s faith was magnified, she had a beautiful grotto of the Virgin Mary built. Group prayers she held in her home is a testament to her strong faith in God.

Her husband Efren who God took before her was a good man. He would ask me
To go cross-country skiing on a golf course.

To Christine, her husband, her sisters Delia, Daisy and faithful Racel we offer our sincere condolences.

May Sonia rest in heavenly peace.

Dr. Garcia was not only our son´s pediatrician, but our treasured friend. Our son Brian, who is 44 now, was her patient until Sonia said "Judi, I think it´s time Brian got a regular doctor!" I never wanted to let her go as his doctor as she was the most caring & sweetest person one would ever meet. I remember seeing her adorable daughter in her office in Spencerport when I would have Brian there for an office visit. Sonia was so proud of Christine & well she should be as she too was as sweet as her Mom. I last saw Dr. Garcia at our eye doctor´s office at Lac de Ville. atDr. Robert Ryan. She looked just like she did 40+ years ago & she still was able to remember me. She will long be remembered by all who knew her & I know that my family & I will never forget the blessing that she was to us. As they say, "God has just received another beautiful angel" at his Heavenly gates. God Bless Dr. Garcia & Christine & her entire family & thank you for being there for Tom & me every time Brian showed up at your office door!! We love you & always will. Tom, Judi & Brian Dudley

He's 40 years old now and I will always remember her as a calming , peaceful loving authority that I could lean on as a new mother. We will never forget what she meant to our family.
