Sonja Marie Oldson Gaitskill, 85, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 29, 1940, in Bourbon County to the late Geneva Stanforth Oldson and Keller Johnson Oldson. She was preceded in death by a sister, Maudie Conley Cook; and a brother, Irvin Floyd Britton. She was the widow of her beloved, Alan Kent Gaitskill, who died in 2007, after 49 years of marriage.
She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Thomas Hurst and Whitney Lynn Curci; son-in-law, Frank Curci; and five grandchildren, Phillip Brandon Hurst, Kristen Gaitskill Hurst, Alan Michael Curci, Adam Kent Curci, Samantha Marie Curci, and seven great grandchildren, Julian, Darrian, Jayda Brook, Ava Lynn, Isaiah, Emory, and Elena.
Sonja graduated from Paris High School. She worked as an administrative assistant, dental assistant, office manager, and a medical photographer. Sonja was also a founding member of St. Raphael Episcopal Church, where she had served on the vestry, several commissions, taught Sunday school, and vacation bible school. She also volunteered at St. Agnes House. Sonja loved her church and God.
She was also a University of Kentucky Fellow. Her greatest pleasures and loves in life were being a wife, mother, and Mimi.
A funeral service celebrating Sonja's life will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Raphael Episcopal Church, 1891 Parkers Mill Road, Lexington, Kentucky, with the Rev. Canon Dr. Helen Van Koevering officiating. Interment will follow at The Lexington Cemetery, 833 West Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky. Family and friends are invited to visitation at the church prior to the service, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Sonja's honor may be made to St. Raphael Episcopal Church or The Lexington Humane Society.
