Sammy Jay "Sonny" King Jr., of
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away at the age of 51 on January 1, 2023. Sonny, who he became known as at an early age by his grandpa Parrish, was born on January 2, 1971, in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to parents Sammy Jay King Sr. and Shirley Clisteen King. The first born of eight children, he embodied what it meant to be the big brother to not only his siblings but to many cousins and friends as well. He grew up in
Del City, Oklahoma and from childhood he enjoyed collecting baseball cards and antique toys, forming an interest early on in what would become one of his lifelong hobbies. Stories from Sonny's youth consist of many outdoor adventures; from days spent exploring the creek, to running around playing games with family, to fishing. He attended Del City High School in his teenage years, and into adulthood found a career as a tradesman in metal fabrication at Trinity Commercial Sales where he worked for over 20 years and was appreciated by those he worked with.
Sonny found happiness most spending time with his son Braxton, who he loved more than life itself. He enjoyed sports and was a huge fan of the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Oklahoma Sooners. He had a deep appreciation for music and his taste ranged anywhere from Elton John to Notorious B.I.G. He was a man of set standards and morals, and anyone who knew him knew that he was unapologetically himself. Hardworking and sentimental, he was fond of joking around and had that classic King sense of humor. He cared deeply for animals and could always be found around them throughout life, especially his dog Beetle Ann. He surrounded himself with things he found value in, and was a sturdy leader, loyal, reserved, independent, funny, creative, and kind-hearted. Many found a friend in Sonny and those lucky to have known him understand why. He will be missed deeply as the father, son, brother, uncle, partner, and friend that he was and not for a moment forgotten.
Sonny was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Ervin King; paternal grandmother Ida Lenora King; and maternal grandparents, Tina Clisteen "Teeny" and George Kellogg. He is survived by his parents, Sammy Jay King Sr. and Shirley Clisteen King of
Ratliff City, Oklahoma; his four children, sons Braxton King and Michael Dugan; daughters Samantha King and McKenze Voshall; four brothers, Scott King of
Del City, Oklahoma; Ervin Lee King and wife Susan of
Duncan, Oklahoma; Donnie King of
Ratliff City, Oklahoma; Patrick King and fiancée Rachael of
