Sonya L. Mitchell

Sonya Lou (Owen) Mitchell, age 80, of Springfield, MO passed away on February 7, 2023, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.
Born on July 9, 1942, in Dora, Missouri, Sonya was the daughter of the late Edward Owen and Laina (Howard) Owen. After graduating from high school in Dora, MO and completing a business program in Springfield, Sonya joined the Loren Cook Company until her retirement. She later did part-time office work for the East Sunshine Church of Christ-her church home for many years.
Sonya married Kerry Mitchell of Springfield in May 1988. Their loving relationship was sadly cut short by his untimely death on October 9 of that same year.
Sonya is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Anna Barton, two brothers Archie (Meta) Owen, and Ed Owens, as well as two nephews and three nieces. She is survived by three brothers Sam (Myla) Owen, Jerry (Ella) Owen, and Larry (Ann) Owen, and her sister-in-law Rosemary (Ed) Owens, as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews and their families.
Sonya was beloved by her family and friends and will be remembered for her love of the Cardinals, Scrabble and Boggle, and her deviled eggs and brisket. She was a wonderful aunt who always greeted her nieces and nephews with a warm "Hi, sweetie!" and ensured that they enjoyed their visits and saw as much family as possible. Sonya loved her family and loved God. She will be deeply missed, but her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with her beloved Kerry and her loved ones who have passed before her.
"She is already missed, but we 'do not grieve as those who have no hope.'"
Visitation for Sonya will be 11:00 am – 12:00 pm Wednesday, February 15, at Greenlawn Funeral Home East. Services will be 12:00 pm at the funeral home with Randy Wray presiding.
Interment will be beside her beloved Kerry, in the Springfield National Cemetery, under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home East.
