Sonya Whang

Sonya Whang (née Young Ryn Bang), a devoted and caring mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025. She was 83 years old. She was the fourth child born to Sung Il Bang and Sun Ah Lee in Busan, Korea, on January 29, 1942. Her adoring siblings were Young Bok, Young Taek, Young Soon, and Young Hoon. She attended Busan Women's University, later marrying June Chun Whang and emigrating to the United States in 1970. They settled in suburban Chicago, Illinois, where they raised two children. She is survived by them: Brian Whang and Monica "Tommy" Whang; son-in-law, Peter Konopinski; and granddaughter, Virginia Whang.
A devout Christian from childhood, Sonya found immense joy and purpose in meditating on her faith and in spreading its message widely. She lived humbly and chose to direct her resources and energies toward helping others. Perhaps her only extravagance was in giving generously to her family.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Rand Road, Mount Prospect, IL 60056. Viewing will start at 5 pm with service at 6:10 pm.
