John W. Nickels

John W Nickels, 94, was born on August 4, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois.
He graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1949 having completed training as a typesetter.
After graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corp. and was medically discharged after a life altering injury.
Once he returned to Chicago, he was employed as a typesetter. John married the love of his life Jane Brunn in 1960 after meeting while on the dance floor. Once married, they settled in Chicago, then moved to Morton Grove in 1960's later building their dream home in Mt. Prospect, IL where they would reside until 2023. Jane and John were married for 59 1/2 years up until Jane passed away in 2020.
As a couple they enjoyed competing and winning dance competitions held at different church social clubs around Chicago. John was also an avid golfer and bowler, winning many trophies and awards from local tournaments.
They had two children: Steve Nickels and Lynda (Richard) Schlecht and had three grandchildren Philip Nickels, Alex Nickels and Liza Jane Schlecht
John was a man of integrity, he stuck by and endured when things and life got hard. He championed his family and prayed for them daily.
A resident of the Summit of Uptown, he was a favorite of the nurses and staff, always encouraging anyone who he was in contact with. He will be missed greatly.
The committal services will be conducted at the Maryhill Catholic Cemetery chapel at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
