Sophie Gettier Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Sophie B. Gettier, a beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, having blessed this world with her presence since August 1, 1929. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Sophie was warm and funny and quick with a comeback. She leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories. Sophie was the heart of her family, a dedicated wife for over 60 years to her soulmate, the late Albert Louis Gettier. Her nurturing spirit flourished in her role as a mother, forever guiding her children Albert L. Gettier, Jr., Michael Gettier and his wife Jeanne, Jeanne Moyer and her late husband Tim, and cherishing the memory of her late son, Joseph Gettier, and his surviving wife Terry. She reveled in the joys of being a grandmother to Kelly and her husband Matt, Kim, Kerri and her husband Chris, Tim, and Amy and her husband Joe. Her spirit will continue through her great-grandchildren Cassidy, Earle, Kailea, Ethan, and Ember and many nieces and nephews.
Sophie found her calling in nurturing not only her family but also the many students and faculty members at Dulaney Valley High School, where she served as a lunch lady for many years. She was famous for her homemade potato salad and mac n cheese and her clam chowder, comfort foods that will long be remembered. Her commitment to community service was further embodied as a Lifetime Member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she volunteered her culinary talents for special events, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate to enjoy her dishes.
A devout Catholic, Sophie lived her faith through her actions, embodying the virtues of kindness, thoughtfulness, and love. When her sons were young, she managed the altar boys for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for 8 plus years. Her interests were a mirror of her personality; she was an avid fan of game shows, relished the excitement of Ravens football, and found joy in the challenging twists of Sudoku puzzles.
Sophie was also an avid golfer for many years playing along with her husband in both Baltimore and on visits to Arizona. Yearly, she eagerly anticipated her winter trips to Cave Creek in Arizona, where she relished the time spent with her niece Linda Warfield and Linda's husband Larry. Sophie's legacy is not confined to her accomplishments but rather is woven into the very fabric of the lives she touched. Her gentle presence will be profoundly missed, yet her spirit, and the essence of who she was, will endure in the hearts of those who loved her. The standards of kindness, honesty, and compassion she set will continue to inspire and guide her family and all who knew her. Sophie B. Gettier's obituary is not only a tribute to a life well lived but a testament to the beauty and strength of a woman who was truly the cornerstone of her family. Family and friends will honor and celebrate Sophie's life at the family-owned Evans Life Celebration Home – 8800 Harford Road, Parkville, MD 21234 for a visitation on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, from 4-6pm. A prayer service will be held on Monday, July 28th, 2025, 11am at Evans. Interment to conclude all services at Parkwood Cemetery.
