Sophie (Borucki) Sciacca of Methuen, 95, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Haverhill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, formerly known as Hannah Duston Healthcare Center.
Born in Bridgeport, CT on August 4, 1929, the daughter of Polish immigrants, she moved with her family to Lawrence at age two.
She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1947 and worked as an usherette at Central Theatre in Lawrence and later as a receptionist in the office of Dr. Joseph Guerrera.
As a teenager, she met Joseph Sciacca, a neighborhood boy destined to become the love of her life. They were married for sixty-three years until his death in 2010.
Sophie spent years helping her husband succeed in his upholstery trade as he ran small automobile, boat and furniture businesses that supported his family.
Family was at the center of her life as she put her heart and soul into providing the best for her daughter and son.
There were day trips as far as the family car could take them. The White Mountains of New Hampshire was a favorite destination, where Sophie and Joe would pack lunch and find a picnic table in the woods. Sophie wanted to ensure that her children grew up with an appreciation of both their Polish and Italian heritages. Every year, she and her husband would roll dough on the kitchen table to make pierogi for Christmas Eve dinner. At Easter, there was Kielbasa.
In the fall, it was time for the Feast of the Three Saints. Sophie and Joe could be found in their usual spot year after year, sitting in lawn chairs on the sidewalk in front of St. Alfio's Villa on Common Street.
And when John Paul II became the first Pope of Polish descent, Sophie was elated and called it a miracle, filling multiple binders with news clippings and photos to mark the proud event. As her life was winding down, she said that she hoped she would one day meet the saint.
Sophie is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Sciacca Dobeck of Salem, NH; a son, Joseph A. Sciacca Jr. and his wife, Kathleen of Haverhill; a granddaughter, Jennifer Bishop and her husband James; a grandson, Joseph A. Sciacca; a great granddaughter, Mary Parkhurst and a great grandson, Bobby Bishop.
In addition to her husband, Sophie was predeceased by her parents, John and Eleanore Borucki; a brother, US Army Cpl. Stanley Borucki, who received a Silver Star and Purple Heart after being killed in combat during World War II; and a sister, Helen Angelari.
Sophie's family extends sincere appreciation to the staff at Haverhill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for its excellent care, particularly care providers Todd and Pearl who became like family to Sophie in her final years.
Funeral services were held privately at Cataudella Funeral Home in Methuen, followed by burial at Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence.
