Stanley (Stan) Barrett Smith – beloved husband, father, brother and friend – passed away peacefully on Feb. 27, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born on January 18, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, Stanley spent most of his life in Alameda, California, where he raised a beautiful family with his wife, Sharon Smith, of 62 years. A 1960 graduate of Encinal High School, Stan went on to be baker by trade for more than 30 years with Mother's Cookies, after briefly serving in the Army Reserves.
More than anything, Stan enjoyed spending time with family, including daily drives around the Island with his son Timmy, big holiday dinners, attending his grandchildren's never-ending sporting events, and taking family vacations to Marissa, Illinois, and Lake Norman, North Carolina. He also enjoyed spending time with countless friends in Alameda and the East Bay, taking Timmy to Special Olympics events, and attending his neighborhood church. Friends, who also knew him as Stan the Man, will miss his friendly banter and caring ways.
To all who knew him, Stan leaves behind many joyful memories and a legacy of love, kindness and generosity. While he is no longer with us, his enduring spirit will continue to inspire all of us.
Stanley was a deeply devoted family man and is survived by his wife, Sharon, daughter Susan Bolger and son-in-law Fran Bolger, son Frank Smith and daughter-in-law Erin Smith, son Timothy Smith, sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Don Rubiolo, and his seven grandchildren: Lauren, Emily and Andrew Bolger, and Melayna, Jacob, Sophia and Lexie Smith.
Friends and family gathered on March 7, 2025, to celebrate Stan's life at Greer Family Mortuary. He was laid to rest with his parents and siblings in Marissa, Illinois. Please feel free to share your memories of Stan with the family on the tribute wall above.
