Stephen Cross Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Feb. 6, 2026.
Stephen Kenneth Cross of Beverly, Massachusetts passed away unexpectedly on January 27th. Steve, fondly known as "Buck" by his family and friends, was born on September 14th, 1951. He was an accomplished chef, and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. He was also an avid reader, a true fan of the New England Patriots, an expert wood craftsman, and a lover of the ocean.

Steve was happiest commanding the kitchen. He was a district manager for the Ground Round for many years. Owner/Manager of the Tap Restaurant in Haverhill, the Happy Clam in Beverly, and the Thunderbird Country Club in Palm Springs, California. Some of the best years of his life were in St. Maarten, managing Zachary's restaurant. Most recently, Steve was the chef and caterer at the Woodbery Market in Beverly. He was famous for his soups and chili and had a large fan following. It was not unusual to see customers devouring a cup of Steve's soup in their cars in the parking lot.

For those who knew and loved him, he will be remembered for his sense of humor and tireless, albeit harmless, teasing. He was famously not politically correct. He was also a hard worker. Even on his days off, he would regularly check in at the store where he patiently apprenticed the "kids" teaching us how to cook his delicious recipes.

He leaves his brother-in-law David Tormey and his beloved nephew Matthew Tormey. His cousins, James (aka Mike) Herlihy; Joan (Caron) Comeau and her husband Larry; Janet Archambeau; and Oscar (Chici) Corelle. His stepsisters, Bunny (Smith) Masse and her husband Robert; and Francine (Scotti) McElvenny. His nephews and nieces, William Smith and Julie Donahue; Chuck and his wife Jamie Smith; Tammy (Smith) Rodolico; James and his wife Ashley McElvenny; and Petra McElvenny; as well as their children and grandchildren.

Steve also leaves his Woodbery family whom he loved dearly; The Patels- Kusum; Amit; Ami; Samit; Arti; Aman; Anya; and Kavi; as well as Eddie; and Rosa and Evelyn.

Stephen was predeceased by his father, Robert Cross; his mother and stepfather, Joan (Shea) and Edmund Scotti; and his sister Kathryn (Cross) Tormey.

He was one of kind and we all feel his loss deeply.

In accordance with Stephen's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com .
