Stephen Dienes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Monreal Srnick Funerals & Cremations on Apr. 18, 2024.
Stephen D. Dienes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on April 17, 2024. He was born on November 4, 1940, in Cleveland, OH to the late Stephen and Theresa Dienes. Stephen dedicated his life to his family, his work, and his passions.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Janet. Stephen's legacy lives on through his children, Stephen Dienes (Shannon), Cathleen Cindric (Miles), Laura Hackathorn (Dave), Debra Corrigan (Tom), and Jennifer Donnellan (Dominic) as well as his cherished grandchildren, Lillian, Kaitlyn, Audria, Miles, Carys, Bryce, Sophia, Skye, Tommy, Stephen, and Grace. Stephen cherished each moment spent with his loved ones, including his beautiful granddaughter Addison, who looks down on us with smiles from heaven. Despite not having biological siblings, Stephen fostered strong relationships with his cousins, Kitty (Tom-deceased), Darlene (Bob-deceased) and Nancy along with their families and many dear friends.
Stephen was a man of many interests and talents. His love for history, trains, and antiques filled his days with joy. A dedicated locomotive engineer for 47 years, he retired with pride and continued to share his passion for trains as he worked as a locomotive engineer for the Cuyahoga Scenic Valley railroad.
His warm personality and sharp mind endeared him to all who knew him. Always dressed impeccably, Stephen enjoyed life to the fullest and had a knack for making everyone feel at ease with his great listening skills and genuine interest in others. In his free time, he could be found reading, completing crossword puzzles, and occasionally cheering on the Browns.
To honor Stephen's life and memory, a private service will be held to celebrate his remarkable journey.
Stephen will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, warmth, and zest for life will continue to inspire those who were touched by his presence. May his spirit live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

I worked with Steve at Collinwood yard late in the stages of our careers. As in any industry the railroad was looking to cut jobs, cut personnel, etc. One day they wanted us to do something out of the ordinary and Steve looked at me and said "It's come to this?" I laughed so hard I almost wet myself. Steve could handle a train like no other engineer I ever worked with. He was so smooth you could barely feel the train move. I used to call him Smooth Steve Dienes. You will be missed Steve.

I got to volunteer with Steve at the CVSR. He always had a smile on his face and if you knew him well, you'd get a hug or a handshake. He will be missed.

Steve and I volunteered together at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and he helped teach me to be a locomotive engineer. We also would talk about old movies and he gave me his copy of "Das Boot", which is still in my DVD collection. Thank you Steve, you will be missed, and you are loved by many!
