Lieutenant Colonel Stephen C Durrant USMC (ret) passed away on February 14, 2024 in Virginia Beach, VA. He was born February 14, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Steve was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Betsy, granddaughters Torie Richard (Thomas) and Kelly Lynch (Dylan), grandson David Brooks and sister Sue Durrant. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen David and Sylvia Burt Durrant and his daughter Deborah Durrant Brooks.
Steve grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School and the University of Utah. His dedication to the Marine Corps began when he joined the Marine Reserves while still in high school. During college at the University of Utah he participated in ROTC as well as continuing with the Reserves. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served 20 years on active duty. His Marine Corps career included a Marine Detachment on the USS Topeka, Okinawa, Little Creek, Inspector/Instructor of a Reserve Unit in Trenton, NJ, Camp Lejeune and Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS.
During his free time, he spent many hours at Eastern Shore Chapel. He served on the Finance committee, was the coordinator of the 8 am acolytes, and was a volunteer at the church's food pantry. Steve was also an avid runner and member of the Tidewater Striders. He was a dedicated competitor and volunteer within the organization. After finishing numerous marathons and dealing with injuries, he gave up running and joined the world of racewalking. In 2013, he was inducted into the Tidewater Striders Hall of Fame.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA. A reception will follow the service at Westminster Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eastern Shore Chapel Pantry.

Worked with Steve at Little Creek and after discussing our previous military lives, incredibly found we were both stationed together at Camp Lejeune, he was in 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines and I was in 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines (both artillery officers). Both changed careers to dentistry. Didn't forget to toast the Marines on 10 November. An honor and privilege to know and serve with this gentleman! Condolences to the family.

I remember Steve well from my times in and out of Norfolk VA with the Navy. And as a periodontist. we had more than the usual contacts in the workplace. He was a great guy and a dedicated professional. My sympathies to his family. Semper Fi Hank Towle Newberry FL

Steve was a great colleague when he worked as a hygienist for years at Little Creek, and was always someone I could go to for another opinion or advice. He got me into race walking when I was injured, and I had been told I shouldn´t run anymore. We went to a race walking clinic together, and did a few events together. I still have my race walking shoes that he recommended , but I haven´t used them much recently, even though his mentorship was excellent. He was terrifically dedicated to his family, and went the extra mile to care for them. I asked for his advice numerous times on matters of dentistry as well as race walking / running, and I always enjoyed his company. Unfortunately, we didn´t stay in touch (my fault - it´s too easy to get absorbed in work and other things), and I am very sad to learn of his passing.

Favorite memory. When Steve, Hartley and I finished a race together and the officials couldn´t say who finished first.
